So in the games I've been playing, I can't seem to get my attack skill raised... at all.

Defense? Constantly, as a dust bandits attack me. I never seem to get to swing back but keep trying to parry. Eventually I need to run and hopefully make it somewhere safe, and start first aid. So First aid goes up too.

But anything else? Hours of playing and still at 1. So I don't have a clue how to raise them! (And what's this talk of 'level 20' in the demo? I have the full version, but don't see any level up or even level stat, or does that just mean skill? I might just be missing something though.

if you are outnumbered you wont have a chance to attack back, which is what increases attack skill. Recruit more men, and try leading bandits to the town guards, then join in the fight so you are not outnumbered.

If you can't seem to build your attack up because you are constantly defending.
1. Try getting more squad members, if they take the hate, you can focus on attacking.
2. Lure hostiles to town guards and run around until only the guards are being hit. Then try and get in some attacks before the guards kill them all.

And yes, level refers to the average of your skills.

The end result though, is that you are going to max your defensive skills way before you max your offensive ones. Well.....maybe.

Here's the logic behind that.
You vs 5 bandits.
You get 1 attack.
They get 5 attacks.
You got 1 point towards attack skill.
You got 5 points toward defense skills.

As the armies get larger, and you've got 20 people against 20.
You'll make and attack, and might not even get attacked back.
Therefore you'll gain attack points but not defense points.
Also, if it's really an issue and it never balances out, I believe there are ways to increase the exp rate for attack skills. This being said Chris never intended people to reach 60+ without weeks, maybe even months of hard work going into the game.

Edit:
!!!! It seems Chris beat me to it!

I actually have been using the 'lure to the guards' trick.

But even then I end up in a fight with one bandit and constantly defending, never attacking.

OK, so after a fight, I had a couple skills raise., But suddenly, while healing, the skills went back down to 1. Is this supposed to happen?

No, that's not supposed to happen. If you can re-create it and screenshot it, that would be much appreciated.

Hmm, it keeps happening, but for some reason trying to screenshot crashes me as soon as I alt+tab out while in combat, so I can't get a same 'load' screenshot.

Wait, what? You lost me now.

Get into combat, get the skill points raised. End combat.
Screen shot via the PrtScr/SysRq key on your keyboard, above your arrow keys.
Then heal yourself and screen shot it again after the stats have dropped.

Yeah, alt+tabbing out with a print screen req crashes the game for me. And it turns out it's not even healing dropping stats, but mid combat they seem to be going down. And then afterwards just fade if anything was left. Except for Dex, that stayed up (Yet to see Str go up)

I don't see why you are alt-tabbing.

F5 saves the game and F9 loads it.
Use that if you are talking about closing the game to submit the screen shots.

Mainly alt+tabbing because if I don't, when I reload things will be gone entirely. I suffer badly from the "Mobs disappear" bug.

Yes, I noticed this too. I presumed it was on purpose, lack of practice meaning your skills with the weapon declined. Though the rate of decline should probably be taken down a bit. Or a system of "temporarily lost" skill points that return very quickly when you fight/practice again.

Or it might just be a bug, in which case it'll probably be fixed soon.

AHAHA, I know what it is. Those of you are using the demo.
The demo was supposed to cap you at 20. But it's bugged and it just resets you back to 1.
Chris can fix this, but that means he has to work on the demo. <_<

Funny, I'm playing the demo and I have only had my skills drop once (the first time I got them higher than 1). Aside from that, I haven't had this problem.

Don't worry. The weapon skill shows skill for your currently equipped weapon. If you are not in combat and not holding a weapon, it displays 1. Look at the full stats window to see all your weapon skills.

Each enemy soldier has their own detection radius I found out. If you slowly inch your character toward an enemy group (the enemy units must have at least a sliver of distance) you can lure them away one by one and slowly kill them that way. If there is a boss unit with guards escorting him lure the guards away first, else they will follow the leader to you.

Also (as many have mentioned) traveling in a pack will greatly help you level up, I currently have eleven total and they all up to 7 attack.

The more battles the more xp, don't let the guards take all the kills, use the divide and conquer strategy.
