I am trying to update and add some new faces. Adding tattoos, scars, different eye colors.
I have updated the dds's but I don't know how to make the UI offer more then the basic 3 options.

Anyone know how to get the system to recognize new faces.

Try adding a new Head (I duplicated HumanMale03 and changed its name to HumanMale04):

Then change the paths to your files you edited:

Afterwards open up the race (probably human):

Scroll down the list and at the bottom you will find the heads. Choose "heads female/male" from the dropdown menu and press "Add". Add your head so it appears on the list.

Great thanks, I was missing the race step.
I notice that the DDS files are not in the folders that are specified when you copy a default head.
But the system seems to find them.

Now the heads are showing up but they are completely black.
When I just copy and rename a variant file, they show up fine. When I edit that file they turn black.

I'm using Gimp 2.8 with the DDS addon.
When the file opens only the eye is normal the rest of the image is checker boarded.
Anyone got any ideas what I'm doing wrong when saving it to a DDS file?
Also how do each of these files effect the face?
There are 3:
head_normal
head_diffuse
head_variant?_diffuse

I'm wondering if I can create scars and tattoos separate and overlay them instead of a new face for each.

Any tricks you experts can share with a noob modder?

Actually figured out that if I save the file in RGB8 I can reopen it and see all the colors.
What format is it originally saved in?

See my edit below!
Be sure to use the right compression. BC1 / DXT1 should work just fine but you could try DXT3 and DXT5 too. Also don't forget to generate Mipmaps.

I didn't even notice that! :D Really strange..

A normal map basically adds more depth to a 2D texture. Just open it up and you will see what I mean.

head_diffuse could also be called head_variant1_diffuse. They just left the variant thing out.
These are the real face textures and just different variants.

EDIT: Forget DXT1! I just tested it and I now know why my dummy textures didn't work. Just use DXT3 as compression and it will work just fine!

Thanks for you help.
It's working great.

I still have to save the image as RGB first then reopen it to see the actual colors. But then it works great. I can just save it with mini maps and compression and they work.

Thanks again.

With the 74.30 update my faces that I had started to show up funny.
with dx9 they show up like this:
head.jpg
head.jpg (146.33 KiB) Viewed 2776 times
you can see the lines go all the way down to the shoulders and they no longer change shade to match the body.

With dx11 they show up with out the edges but are all shaded very dark.

I opened them and resaved them but they are no better.
Was there a change that I need to make to fix them?

Figured it out. Needed to use the new HI res mask and under layer.

I can still use the same low res faces.
I have not figured out the save option for the new HI res faces yet.
