Found it! I joined a caravan and followed it around until it was attacked. I helped fend off the attackers. Instead of continuing to follow the caravan, I took the spoils of that first battle. I came away with a new sword, some chest armor, a shirt, a pair of boots and a better sword. I limped back ...
