and as chris has said constantly we do not know where this game is set. the bearded man has considerded shields and claymore which you don't think of when u think of japan, also the empire sergants have tri-pointed hats which are also no what you would think of when you think japan or middle east.

chris has said that this game is going to be main on hand-to-hand combat which means its set around the middle ages, but it also have more modern doors and robatic parts which mean its the end of middle ages. so i gusse the game would be set right before gunpowder has be discovered.

and this might be place in between china and europe (since he has though of european weapons) but i don't think anyone acually know
I'M BACK !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

and i bought kenshi!!!!!!!!!

The robotic replacement would fit very well, and I'm kind of looking forward to it. Saying that it's "doesn't fit" is just wrong. Kenshi has a very, as Kamos said, steampunkish design with things like wind generators. Robotic limbs wouldn't be that far off and muskets can well be left out, anachronistic technology isn't that new a thing in fiction.

And if Kenshi is in fact post-apocalyptic it could mean that the more advanced robotic placements(assuming there would be quality differences) aren't manufactured anymore, but scavenged instead.

I'd like to see someone sprinting full speed on a sand dune with a peg leg. Peg leg would likely be only a temporary substitute until low-quality robotic counter part can be acquired, as in first aid or something.
Ends up taking up a bunch of space if people start quoting quotes. I only do it on large posts. :P

Except that each background is a different colour and is very easy to read. When it's all in code it becomes and ugly mess that jars with the rest of the forum.

If we keep this chain going, this will get out of hand. I like the code tags because it consolidates stuff people have already read. :P

Also, it only allows you to embed 3 quotes, code tagging it allows more.

Before gunpowder, but after automatic metal doors? So, before the 9th century, but after the 19th century?

No, I think the most logical thing to think in this case is that the game takes place in a universe where gunpowder simply doesn't exist. I know, if you think about the real world, it is not logical at all, but in a fantasy setting, it is as logical as you want it to be.

I remember reading something about Kenshi being post-apocalyptic or something. That would sound most logical for me. Maybe there's not anymore knowledge or any material needed to make new weapons (muskets, firearms,... etc.) but swords and stuff is easy to make. And the alien doors are something people find from the ashes of civilization that once existed. Maybe they look for simple electronic circuits and try to combine them into something useful. :|

Robotic limbs are an answer to an evolution to a key component of combat that is already in game, and that is limp incapacitation...that may be replaced by limb amputation. You should notice that it happens a lot. The arm is limp, the leg is dragged behind.

Let me quote from the FAQ

"Severed limbs? Will there be severed limbs??!!!1!1!?

II am still thinking about this, I have a way but it may damage performance, and I need a feasable way for limb replacement in a game world too low-tech for robotics. "

Now, there are not a lot of mainstream games with such an unforgiving mechanism as having a squad member being permanently incapacitated or crippled. Its something that will have to be balanced and thought out. The final setting will likely be constructed to allow the core game play that Chris is pushing for.

Since we don't know Jack... ya know aboot the world. Maybe it's like Star Wars. A far away universe, who knows. Its a game and doesn't have to be based entirely on reality.

This.

I don't get why games have to follow the exact same technology path as real life. Its the same as an alternate history.

Personally I think that, unless the game is based purely on realism in the real world, trying to compare everything to real life will just drag the game down. It is what it is. It is not our world with the same technology etc. Just...let it be what the creator wishes it to be.

Well i guess non-combustion heat sources such as solar power, nuclear power or geothermal energy may be used (rip from wiki =P )
This gave me an idea... perhaps Kenshi takes place in a world where oil has run dry? Society runs on oil, and if it runs out, collection of food to support large populations would rapidly plummet. It only makes sense to me. And perhaps all the extra farming that would compensate creates a central American "dust-bowl" effect, where all the top soil is run dry from excessive agriculture... hence the desertiness.

Then again, I may be going off on too much of a tangent and the setting is purely just fictional with no, perhaps less, or perhaps a background that hasn't had this side of it thought of yet.

Regardless of everything I just said, I think robotics would fit well with the theme. I mean, everything's made of very "industrial" looking metal. And people wear these interesting clothes that are not at all historical... as far as I know.

Why is there excessive agriculture after oil runs out? Isn't the point that agriculture drops because we have less ability to farm without the machines?
