I feel like a noob asking this

You simply drag the item over the space another item (of the same type) is occupying. Keep in mind a traders backpack is required to do this and can only be done in the space supplied by the traders back pack.

Not all backpacks stack and not all items stack.

Plus, they have to be EXACTLY the same item. Two swords that look the same but slightly different damage values are NOT the same sword. Annoying but, it happens. I'd be happier if they went into a 'swordpile' stack that was like another mini bag for swords that take up the same number of squares or whatever.
