Can you make steel bar?

I am wondering because making a huge base but I upgraded to a weapon bench 3 which requires steel and now I can't get a level 2 up? So can I make steel bars yet or do I have to research more? ( Note: I am on tier 6 but still working on the ore and weapon skills)

Nope. Gotta buy 'em for now.

Hopefully we'll be able to build a furnace soon.

A coal mine should be added and we can smelt iron and coal together in a furnace.
