the gate ?

I have 13 and designed the approach to the gate so its in the field of fire from 3 sides. And the bandit bands still reach the gate.Though the 2 swordsmen i have standing at the gate,on the inside, normally hold the bandits in place long enough for them to get taken out before they breach the gate.

All of my crossbow men are at 30% or higher accuracy.

30% is really low. I bet they rarely hit bandits...
Answer depends on squad size slider.

...the answer depends on a lot of things, however since the question asks for an answer from the player, and not the specifics on the "why " of their answer.....

Answers like "40+ crossbows with 30% hit and 4x squad slider to stop starving bandit raid" are good in your opinion? I think they're useless.
You have not specified all parameters, so answering how many is impossible.

Since you not asking the question, and i am, im really not concerned with what you find "useless"...

Now surely you are you not going to continue to post non answers, surely you have something better to do with your time....

Just to diffuse the situation further...

I only have 4 and it's sufficient to wipe out most assaults, but then again, I'm only playing on 0.5x squad size... plus the fact that some of the enemies can 'climb' onto the ledge from outside (while my gate is intact) to attack my turret gunners so turret and melee training at the same time works for me too.

I just tell myself they "scaled" the wall .And agree, nothing wrong with a little cross-training.The friendly fire can be a bit rough though,as the other turrets fire on the mixed melee.

Yes! I've had people almost dying from friendly fire, which is why I would at most have 6 turrets on the two walls adjacent to the gate. Bleeding damage from upgraded crossbow is just as likely to kill my people as well as bandits. By chance, I'm actually in an area whereby I could play 'tower defense' by setting up turrets along a natural S-shaped winding path... maybe I should for the fun of it.

Ive been able to cut down on friendly fire by using a "V" shape for the wall and gate area.

Id recommend making the enemies run a gauntlet to reach your gate, its kinda fun to watch them do so.

It really does depend on a variable that you didn't supply, as people have stated. Your squad mod slider...

A 4.0? Gonna take a lot of arrows, as i''m going to be hit by like 20 at once..
0.5? I could do it with probably 2 crossbows.

This is how my defense works

3x, gate, 3x

Friendly fire only possible once they start banging on the gate.
But I think the V idea at the bottom of that, rather than the flat wall is probably a better idea.
