Is there any chance that the Leviathan will be weakened or limited to specific areas in future updates?
I just walked into Clownsteady and found it littered with dead and unconscious NPCs. Basically, almost all the shopkeepers and guards were dead because of a Leviathan stuck in the middle of the town.
I checked Brink and it was in the same situation. Nearly all guards and shopkeepers dead from a rampaging Leviathan.
It's awesome to look at and all but unless the NPCs somehow get replaced over time, it renders towns lifeless rather early on.

you can mod it.
or
get enough highly trained people and they can take down a Levi fast as it is.
but am sure it will be adjusted over time.

Do you believe the sexes should be equal?
Oh heavens no.
Then Men would become unmanageable

Ya, this thing one hits everything. I've been in the same situation, I went to Brink and it just obliterated all the town guards, which are not pushovers and there were like 20. I sent my whole squad in, within 2 min they were all unconscious, and within 5 they were all dead. I like the idea of this creature but it's way to powerful and seems to randomly appear anywhere. They need to have it set to specific area's and not just randomly wander like that. If they want it to wander fine but to magically appear in a town and completely destroy it with 0 way of actually killing it. I need to test this out furhter I may make a squad of 5 chars with like 80 to each attribute. Though that would take way to long to train someone, let alone 5, to take on one of those.
For everyone not knowing how to mod, I just made 4 version which will weaken the Leviathan.
1. leviathan_50hp
health reduced to 50%
2. leviathan_25hp
health reduced to 25%
3. leviathan_50all
health reduced to 50% AND combat skills reduced to 50%
4. leviathan_25all
health reduced to 25% AND combat skills reduced to 25%
The last version could be a bit underpowered.. no idea, I have yet so see a Leviathan.
Extract the .zip and copy the version you want to your Kenshi data folder "\Kenshi\data" and add the mods name as a new line to the mods.cfg.

I think they are quite fun as they are, always makes me run in the opposite direction on my new save, for now anyway! Although I agree that they do destroy a towns populace very fast. Maybe make them less prone to engage a cities army unless severely provoked.

its also good for combat training for you have way more to fight. ( Bandit wise ) that should get you some extra training when you're ready to take on the Leviathan

Did you make the town guards strong enough to cope with levi's spawning inside the towns?

I kinda have an idea for balancing them.
Along with making them slightly weaker, why not make them return to their "nests" after a period of time, instead of them wandering around everywhere.
They would have a range of influence based off of that timer. Assuming the leviathans move at 2m/s or 4.4mph, and a time limit away from the nest area of 33 minutes 20 seconds, they would have a range of 2km of nonstop movement.

However, if their nest is destroyed then they may wander around endlessly until eliminated.
Along with the previously mentioned solution, the number of leviathans could be reduced so they are a rare entity, which provides great reward upon extermination and looting of the corpse.
This also solves the problem of leviathans dominating city areas by just standing there
In addition, I noticed that none of the animals actually return to their nests after being engaged...

Quite honestly i don't think they need to be changed. They were already switched over to non-aggressive, but they do still wipe out towns.. However.. keep in mind that a new world map is coming, with biomes. This will probably change spawn points for some things, so it may be that leviathans aren't just randomly spawned all over the world.
I personally love how overly stomp-happy they are, and i sure hope they don't become weaker. They only need to be restricted in how they spawn so they don't stamp out towns. That way you can ignore them if you so choose.

If one does show up, hope that you have your base nearby, because wide area damage mean that guards would have to fight one at a time or lure/kite while the turrets in range try to chip off as much of its health. Turret friendly fire gets nasty on crowds.
They are the 'end game difficulty' of enemies. There's no incentive for slaying them or the animals aside from base defense and potential bragging rights at the moment. Those dogs and beak things look mighty fine as leather and meat sources. Can somebody bring out the cooking pit and spit?
