Food, really? Has there been an update that I missed?

As for sitting in the desert...maybe someone died there and left it behind?

Same, found 2 boxes of food just lying in the desert sand. Somewhere north of Brink, I think.

Dropped by some travelling merchant killed by bandits? Don't know, I've never seen killed NPCs dropping anything before...

I once found 4 or 5 stacks of food sitting on a hill once. But no bodies. So I assume that if it was a fight then the defeated moved off once they recovered. NPC looting would be a nice addition in that case.
