I am on day 60 and have a group of apporx. 15 humans and 5 animals (garru, bone dog, wild bull). In the area of „Last Stand“ (westcoast) I have a small fortress (walls, gates, 2 houses, 2 iron mines, 2 stone processors). My problem is: I am always short on food!
Every day I have to travel to „Last Stand“ with 2 garrus and sell most (but not all) iron plates and building materials to the trader in the bar and buy wraps, fish and meat. This annoys me and I would like to start a food production so that at least my humans get feed by bread or something. But I have no clue how to start.
Wenn I prospect the ground I dont have good quality for water or soil (or what it is for food production, I don´t have the english name).
What do I need to start farming? My technology allows planting green fruits but that doesnt help for food and my they have only 9% rating.
Thank you in advance for some hints and help.
Always short on food
Check the type of ground.
Arid is better for cactus.
Green is better for Green fruit and wheat.
Swamp is better for Rice.
Nothing grows in Dead.
Water is the must, if you have poor water you will need lots of wells.
Wheat grows fairly better in most areas as it is use for bread and bread is the next step to sandwiches.
You can start with just cooked vegetables which will make your green fruit better, but with bread they make food cubes which is 75 nu's.
Same with cactus you can make chew sticks, but add bread and you get dustwiches. Mmmmmm.
Rice is best in swamps. and a bowl of rice is good, but add vegetables and a bowl of Gohan is better.
and always look for some meat running around. one good bull herd will sustain you till your crops come in. And wrap it in bread for a tasty treat.
p.s. Oh and it's desert cooking as in sand not desert cooking as in ice cream and cobbler. I was very sad when I first realized that.

You need a good area to grow different types of crops
first off, what crops have you researched?
first off, what crops have you researched?
Do you believe the sexes should be equal?
Oh heavens no.
Then Men would become unmanageable
Current computer specs.
AMD FX-8150 - Eight Core, 3.60GHz
NVidia GTX 1050TI
24GB Corsair Vengeance DDR3 1600 MHz Ram
WD 1tb HD, 870 EVO 1TB SSD

Sorry for the delay and thank you for your help.
I didnt had researched crops as I needed the crop itself for researching. So I had to buy it from other towns.
No I do own a small wheat farm with 59% quality. I harvest about 3 Wheatstraw from it but hey, I started farming!
Am I right, that I will have to find another (and better) ground in a far distance to get enough other crops? So maybe a rice field in the east and cactus farm in the north? Just for example? And then I need to transport the goods to my colony?
Thank you again in advance for your help

finding better is always a option
or simply mass farm when quality is low, a good farmer with enough skill can do about 8 fields. maybe one or two more.

Make sure to upgrade your fields, that gets you more crops so you get more per harvest. Also have four people working to harvest a field at one time, the increases yield as well.
Having at least two fields of the same kind is the best way to do that so one can be upgraded while the other produces the crops for the upgrade.
When I have a lot of farmers and fields I like to have the same group work the same crop types, this gets to the point where you have several fields in different stages of growth so you have a more consistent supply of things like wheat and veggies.
If a certain crop type doesn't work well in your area, you waste water and energy to plant it. Each crop type has a food progression, so what ever grows best in your area is the one you should focus on. When you learn Hydroponics then you can increase your variety.

Those animals will certainly eat you out of house. =P
If you find a biome that rains the fields will get watered which means you won't need as many wells since most of the water would go into cooking food.
Also, when planning out your food, consider the extra nutrition you gain from combining foods.
Chew sticks are a 20nu food, Bread is a 25nu food. Combine cactus and bread and you get dustwich at 75nu. You gain 30nu and use half as much water.
Similar thing with bread with greenfruit for foodcube and rice with greenfruit for gohan.
gohan can be weird to make in one base since wheat can grow in both arid and green biomes, but not swamp biome. Rice is only swamp. Places like Vain are a mix of green and swamp biomes.
