Uhm, I've actually tried to drag them away from each other. But if you don't drag them stupidly far, the moment you actually engage in melee with the one you dragged away, the rest will come to his aid.

one strategy is to have a designated medic character and keep him far from combat. Then when your men get wiped out and the bandits are long gone he can run in and heal them. When they recover, they'll be a lot tougher for the experience.

That kind of requires you to have more than just 3-5 followers though. <_<
Granted with the new feature for a new game with imported squad that's easier to get now.

Before the import feature I was able to have eleven total, I almost had 12, but as soon as I hired my 12 a bandit team ambushed me in town and killed one of my veterans.

Ouch, well, I actually started to play, my comment on having more than 3-5 was back when you really couldn't play the game.

Now I have 14 guys all with the best gear you can buy.
I'm stay at 14 because anymore get's cluttered and there's no point in having such a large force.....yet.

Swinging the really heavy planks and axes makes your strength go up the quickest. 1Kg to 4Kg katanas make your dexterity go up the quickest. If you want to one on one that last ninja with a particular member of your squad set everyone else on the squad to block. If your dude gets cut too much switch them to block mode and take a different squad member off of block. The bandits will always engage whoever is actually swinging at them. This is a good way to get the new guy on your team's defensive skill up.
