How do i use the books to research the small house?

you need to research level 2 research.
You also need to have the books stored in the table.

hover your mouse over any tech that's red
it tells you what you need.

What table? The shop table?
N u need a small house to research lvl 2...
Nd the only cost for the house is 2 books....

Research table, or research bench, thing you're researching on. Put your required amount of books there. Same action is needed if something else is required like crops, piece of tech, and so on.

Yeah, so to clarify.

Any research that has a material cost (Books, Ancient Science Books, etc) need to be put into the Research Bench beforehand.

Hold right-click on the Bench and select 'Inventory' then transfer the Books/materials into the Bench's storage. As said, you will need to do this will any research that has a material cost too. Wheatstraw Farming, for instance, will require 8 x Wheatstraw to be put in before you are able to research the technology.

It can also double as some temporary storage for other items, if needed. Although, storage isn't exactly hard to build.
