Pretty sure this never happened before 98.38 (or even later patches, lost track), wandering trader now also targets nests, I think that AI should instead ignore/avoid nest type towns.

I've seen tech hunters switch from their usual 'wandering trader' job to 'patrolling town' job at nests before. It was a wolves nest I believe. I remember it was a while ago before that update, I was staking them out since they were a skeleton and it was right on the edge of Holy territory, I was hoping to swoop in and steal the gear without suffering a relation penalty for attacking myself by letting our good Holy Brothers take care of Narko's menace (and tbh I wouldn't have been able to take them on anyway).

I think the behavior can make sense when the 'nest' is like a camp for the cannibal hunters, mercenaries, nomads, etc. But it does seem odd when it's animal and bandit nests. Maybe we just got to imagine they're resupplying.

Once i've had Noble Wrath attack switching target from my town to a nearby wolf nest. They've come there and just stood motionless. I wonder what did wolfies done to phat-ass nobles? :)
