So, i was using the new clothes stats to make a master Martial artist. Since now we have "Armoured Rags" (+4 Martial arts bonus) "Armoured Rag Skirt" (same) and "Martial Artist Bindings" (same) makes a total of +12 Martial Arts Bonus..

I equipped that to a new character i hired, and started to fight. But then i noticed it took way too long to get my Martial arts to level 7 (+12 for equipment was a total of 19), so i tested something... i opened the "stats window" and hover my mouse over my Martial arts Skill.. so i have 15% for next level, then i let my character hit the enemy JUST ONCE and paused the game, hovered over again and now it ways 20%.. okay..

The moment of truth: i took off all three items that gave him a Martial Arts bonus.. so now he has only his level 7 martial arts, and waited for him to hit the enemy JUST ONCE again, paused the game and, when i hover over it.. it says now 31% for next level.

So, when i had 7+12 (19) martial arts every hit would give 5% exp
But when i took off the items leaving only 7 martial arts.. every hit would give 11% exp.

I this working as intended? it is supposed that equipment bonuses make your skills level up slower as if you actually had THAT level of skill?
if it is.. i suggest it shouldn't work like this. My suggestion is, skills should level up accordingly to the BASE STAT (not the bonus included)

Since i had this experience.. i'm thinking same happens with "Melee attack" and "Melee Defense" skills.. so an armour like the "Samurai Armor" (Melee attack bonus -8) would make you level up your melee attack skill faster.. so insted of being a disadvantage of the armour, this can be taken as an advantage.

EDIT: i forgot to say.. i think something similar MIGHT (i haven't tested this yet) be happening with the "dodge" skill, since when you are encumbered you get a NEGATIVE bonus of dodge.. (which might mean that you level up dodge faster) but at the same time... if you are encumbered the "dodge XP rate" gets lowered.. (this is said when you hover your mouse over the "dodge" skill in the Stats window)
I hope you get the idea of what i mean.
Heavier armour would make Dodge level up slower (as intended) but at the same time faster (because of negative bonus)

I second that base stats be the modifiers for exp gain when dealing with the combat bonus from higher/lower level opponent, but I can see it being logical. You fight just as well as them, so why should you feel like you're getting better faster from fighting them?

Although from a player standpoint ideally I would agree with you most games don't handle stats differently than described.

Quite frankly a lot of the scripts are an unplayable mess in 99 and if it even took 1h from that work I would regret it.

You are correct, the stats apply from what you show, not your base. Think of it like this:

You're asking to fight like a skill 12 but receive skill 1 points. You're saying I want the bonus fighting, but don't want the reduced XP that comes with a higher level. Also known as, "I want to eat my cake and still have a cake."

This can also work in your favor.

Some skills you can suppress with armor, and they will then increase based on the lower number, not the base number. For instance, you have an attack of 10 and equip a weapon with -6 to attack. You will gain XP as a skill 4 instead of as a skill 10.

I disagree with the suggestion of using the base stat. Think of it as this:

You will learn to surf better if you enter the water with a real surfboard, properly waxed and naked feet than if you get in with common wood plank in trainers. Unappropriate equipment will hinder you while appropriate one will make things easier for you. You'll have more feeling and won't get wrong stimulus. You'll notice easier how when you do "this" you achieve "that" and you for sure will get closer to the things that you *should* as the ideal thing.

Thank you all for the responses.. i guess i wasn't thinking clearly (or at least not from a Real Life logic).
And even though i still want the GAME to be like that, i can see now why it is how it is. I can rest at ease knowing that things work as intended at least. :)
