I can never seem to get a good base up. I start with the 5 charachters, build up a small fort, then get absolutely owned! is there anyway to turn down bandit occurence? is he planning to reduce bandit occurance in the future? Thanks to whoever answers!

Running with less characters is the more difficult route. You have a few options. You can fight starving bandits until you can take bandits on, or you can recruit more members. Numbers are very important.
And...Chris has been saying that there will be things worse than bandits coming for you base soon.

I have about a dozen men and equipped them with gear from scavenging then purchased good armor and weapons. An easy way to get a large crew without traveling over the map is to recruit the members in the first town then just exit , import squad and repeat. (I do this now when starting over, just because it is less tedious and I am familiar with the towns).
Staying close to towns, trader caravans, army patrols is a good way to fight without being overwhelmed in the beginning. You can do it, you just started town building a little early.

Heh, I suppose I was lucky. My main guy can man handle any bandit raids so far. Still he can't make up for the lack of laborers so I had to hire more.

Yes, this patch has killed my single player run. I now have a bunch of guys who's only purpose is to slave away for their powerful overlord.

I started a new game with .40 using the "Freedom Seekers' starting point. Had no problems building my base. Just remember to have everyone put their backpacks in their inventory when they aren't actively using their building materials, otherwise they are very easy to KO. Set them all to block, except the Old Soldier, and have him do all the healing at the end to conserve on first aid kits.

Set your outpost to public also, any trader caravans that visit will hang around a for a few days even if you have nowhere for them to trade with you and will scare off the smaller groups of bandits.

Trading doesn't seem to work for me.. Trading caravans just wander in and out through the door for a couple days when they show up. I have a shop counter full of stuff and the outpost is set to public, anything else needed?
