Well, it does give you instructions at the very beginning of character creation for the basic stuff. I would add holding down right click would give you a lot more options in terms of what you want to do to people (trade, talk, attack, recruit, etc.), though just clicking once (or twice) will activate the most obvious action (trade with trader, attack enemies, talk to recruits).

It can be vague stuff, especially at first. So if you want to play a certain role, you should do the following:

Trader - go to the nearest advanced trade store - where they should sell things like tool and luxury goods and all that - buy as much as you can fit in inventory (without slowing yourself too much; need to escape the bandits!) then go to different towns and outposts and figure out where you can make a profit. I don't know if making a profit is possible yet as of v0.42, but if it isn't, wait a bit. If possible, see if you can own a store and make profits that way. Continue trading.

Freemen(?) - Train your group to be able to fight off the bandits on their own (without guards, as you will likely have to be dependent on just your own men). Once done, find an empty, flat and - most importantly - safe location to build up your settlement. Build a shack, research station and anything else that may be important (small farms you'll probably need to eat, and the shack can double as a very weak fortress to hold your men in, in case bandits show up). Get a place that helps you make a profit; this is necessary if you want to afford getting building materials. Go nuts from here on out.

Wanderer and other classes - Pretty much, do whatever you want. Just remember to train up and get good at combat; you'll need to be able to fight if you want to do anything.

If all else fails, you can always watch let's plays on youtube. They'll help you out if there's no tutorials for the time being. If I'm missing any other important details, you're all free to correct me or add on to what I've said here.

Profit is easy to make. Check the info box on the trade goods by pointing your cursor at the item. There will be a green or red percentage. Green is less than 100%, buy these items. Red is above 100%, sell these items. Each town price index is randomly generated at game start.
