Is there a way to display more info on the icons of the map?

You should be able to hover over them to get a popup. Though that may just be on experimental.

on experimental if you've already visited (not just discovered) a settlement you can hover over an icon and get basic population and military info.

Zooming in on the map also helps. Not all icons are visible from maximum height.
