I'm not sure if I'm missing some magic screen that tells me a new list of commands, because I can't seem to do much of anything. I've tried about every key on my keyboard, right clicking, alt clicking, but I can't seem to eat any food. Holding right click doesn't do anything, and I've tried to drop it on the ground and right click to eat it too. Am I just stupid, or should I repost this in bug reports?

Then Men would become unmanageable

as long as you have it in your inventory you will eat it when you get hungry.

AFAIK only one person in the squad needs food in his/her backpack for all of the squad to share between them, as long as they are close together.

Also if someone could confirm this: if you store food in containers in your base, your characters will run to it and grab 2 meals (1 for eating and 1 for later use). But it looks like if they grab a food item that has more than 60 NU (it lasts more than one meal) they will only grab one.
we're all still learning how to be better people (well, some of us.)

This is true, characters will run to a foodcontainer and grab the amount of food they need for a little While.
Unless they stand too far away from the food source.

This is Just a rough estemation, but i believe that you only need:
For 20 characters:
- 2 x weathfarms
- 1 x well
- 1 x mill
- 1 x breadoven.
- 1 x breadstorage.
Plus the People needed to operate everything. I think 3 should be enough.
Although i have more farms than I need, I think selling bread to the holynation is a good source of income.

P.S. Most of the problems I've seen people having with the food system revolve around relying on low-Nu foods like bread. ;)

I mostly stick to meatwraps.

Well the setup of ur farms depends on the availeble resources ...

For example my outpost has 67 % output on weath about the same on water. So more are needed.

I agree with jay meatwraps (and bread) are the main food i use. offc bread cos after a while i have over a thousand bread so doesnt really matter...

But it also depends on the availability of animals. i kill packs of 5-7 goats to keep feeding 38 characters without problems. Its 7 raw meat each.

If you can keep from killing the entire squad of goats, they do replenish over time.

I mostly just snag one goat whenever a herd passes.
