I imported a game and had blue prints for Merc leather armor and drifters pants on one of my characters. Took a while to get to the point where I could craft armor again, when I used the two blue prints I learned how to craft standard merc armor, but the drifters pants are only prototype grade. And there is no option in the tech tree to increase the quality of them.
Has something changed in the way you improve the quality of crafted items?

Lucky you, how i crave to find those pants now! should've grab a bp from the old world
)
As i remember, from the old versions at least, only first item crafted would bear the protorype grade. All followind items should be of normal grade.

DISCLAIMER: Still playing 74.32, but some of this should still apply. Normal crafting progression goes like this:
1. Build or buy at least a small shack.
2. Build a basic starter research bench.
3. Research everything available, including the crafting skill (Weaponsmith, Armorsmith, etc.). Best NPC to recruit for this is a Medic. They usually have at least a skill of 20 Science.
4. Build a basic crafting station for a chosen item category (weapons, armor, medkits, etc.)
5. Assign a squaddie to the station.
6. Supply them with raw materials (fabric, steel bars, chain, hemp, etc.). Have them churn out as many as possible to level up their skill.
7. Continue all lines of research available to you, upgrading your housing and research bench as necessary.
8. When you find something you want to build (let's use leather shirts as an example), buy the blueprint from the NPC vendor. Take it to your outpost/home town where you have your crafter.
9. *Make sure you do NOT have your backpack open and SAVE!* Right click the blueprint. You should get a confirmation message that you have successfully researched Leather Shirts.
10. Open the research/tech tree and you should now have new research available for something like "Leather Shirt 2". This depends on the level of your research bench. In 74.32, with a maxed research bench, it tops out at "Leather Shirt 3".
11. Research the new tech. Now, if you have a leather armor crafting station, you should have a choice to build Leather Shirts. If you just learned the blueprint, and have not done the research, the resulting item will be "Prototype" level and awful quality and value. If you have researched Leather Shirt 2, the item will be "Shoddy". If you have researched the 3rd level, the item will be "Standard". In 74.32, "Standard" is as good as it gets.
