Activating demo with my steam key?

The demo sold me on the game, picked it up just a bit ago on Steam. Bought it through steam storefront directly. I took the CD key provided on the game's entry in the library and try to activate the demo with it and it just fails. The key is very long, seems to fit the template from the FAQ.

I'd like to avoid redownloading 5gb of data and having to start over; is plugging the steam key in to activate the demo supposed to work? Not seeing anybody else trying that in my brief forum searches.

you won't have to start over
just copy your save game folder over to the steam install version

the other part concerning the key one of the Devs has to address.
