i was bored and kind of ended up searching for different phobias because I heard that apparently there's a woman who has a phobia of ass cracks

Here's the notable ones i picked out //with a few of my thoughts

Chaetophobia – fear of hair
Chromophobia - fear of bright colors
Chronophobia – fear of time and time moving forward // Image
Coulrophobia – fear of clowns (not restricted to evil clowns) // just liked the part in brackets :D
Friggatriskaidekaphobia, Paraskavedekatriaphobia, *Paraskevidekatriaphobia – fear of Friday the 13th // just cause the names are awesomely complicated
Hexakosioihexekontahexaphobia – fear of the number 666
Hypnophobia or somniphobia – fear of sleep //that one must be really hard...
Ipovlopsychophobia – fear of having one’s photograph taken. // :ugeek:
Nomophobia – fear of being out of mobile phone contact // seriously
Omphalophobia – fear of bellybuttons //  almost cute
Ophthalmophobia – fear of being stared at //
Papaphobia – fear of the Pope //bwahaha
Philophobia – fear of love //ehm
Phobophobia – fear of having a phobia //eeehhm
Tetraphobia – fear of the number 4
Uranophobia, Ouranophobia – fear of Heaven //  wtf
Workplace phobia – fear of the workplace //yeeeaah right ;)
Apiphobia – fear/dislike of beez //obvious reason why i added this one
Zoophobia – fear of animals // http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=baKbQ7Xs71I (i really was bored...)

/edit: just remembering that the tetraphobia is probably for japanese people :geek:

Yeah well... I bet at least one or two of those phobias are something that has never been diagnosed. Because you can make up phobias by adding word phobia after it.

Phobia means nothing but fear of something. X phobia is fear of X. And replacing X with anything you can make phobia from it. Also, if you want to make it sound "scientific" or "real disease someone had," just translate X into latin.

For example: Subridentephobia = Fear of smileys (Subridentes mean smile) / / Anyone browsing forums would be in trouble.

Realtimestrategyphobia = You know it. (Just as scientifically correct name as claustrophobia, only different language and never been diagnosed)

I'm sure everyone knew all I'm saying already and I might be killjoy but because of that, I find no fun in phobias. :| sry

PS. I have acrophobia (fear of heights) of some level. Never had real trouble with it because it's not bad and I like adrenalin.

You can make something up obviously  but the ones above are officially recognised, they have been all diagnosed enough times over and over again enough to create treatments and such and are part of an official list (partly for insurance reasons). There's medical reference books for those ;)

You can't find Subridentephobia or Realtimestrategyphobia in the dictionary but you can find papaphobia lol.

Also: phobia is greek and thus you should use a greek word to name a phobia and NOT a latin. It's an error that happens a lot by meds and that's why some names that are used a lot in the profession, but are wrong, end up being referenced...

edit: i used only officially recognised phobia except for the ass crack phobia on line 1 lol, that was an anecdote from my neurophys professor

In that case, sorry for my stupidness. I will try and correct my mistakes in the future.

I have to admit, ass crack phobia was the only one that almost made me smile a bit.

But i forced you to use google (i guess) so i win :P

edit: Also mixing latin and greek is a common mistake lol... like aquaphobia or claustrophobia (actually even neuroscience is a mixed word i believe). or in other domains: television comes in mind... and probably a lot of other ones lol

Speaking of mixed latin/greek.

The plural of Octopus is Octopodes. This is because the word has a greek root rather than latin. So Octopi is WRONG!!!

I love language.

Really, you make a list of silly phobias and forget to include the most (tragically) hilariously named phobia of all time? I am disappoint.

BEHOLD!
Hippopotomonstrosesquipedaliophobia -- fear of long words  .

The guy who came up with that name was an evil, evil man.

I can just imagine the look on a person's face when they actually see what their phobia is called.

Pteridophobia: Fear of ferns.

Coprastasophobia: Some people are actually terribly afraid of becoming constipated.
