I'd like to see the town names in a higher-contrast color, because some of them, namely the ones near mountains, are difficult to read.
It would also be nice if the map's opacity was adjustable.

well that would be a nifty touch to the map system BUT, there is a lot of stuff that is moar important now, maybe chris will add it later ? well see.

I know it might be early for these little things but since there already is Map subject then, why not?:::
Some sort of compass would be good to make moving from city to city easier. Or possibly an icon to map witch shows where the camera is and witch way its facing...

We had this suggestions in an almost 1 year old thread. Makes me think about the cycle of life and stuff like thatSantaissick wrote:Some sort of compass would be good to make moving from city to city easier. Or possibly an icon to map witch shows where the camera is and witch way its facing...

i want more greened backgrounds, always desert make me upset.
I want to be a ninja and run across a bambu forest, runing water and go into a japanesse castle at night.
where's my geisha?????
Is ok if kenshi is a doomed future but at least a day/night cicle is necesary.
Perhaps a rocked fortress? undergroud base?
P.D.
this's an interesting game but when you want to see an elevated point and you're down, the camera don't look up enought and you think "oh shit what is up there, i hope not an enemy..."
regards.

I mentioned this a long time ago,but that topic was not originally about map suggestions. ( This one is, so there is no need to create a new one) Also, Kenshi has progressed a lot further and the forum population has increased. (So I thought it best to revisit an old thought).
Original statement (Yeah that's right, I quoted myself(As well as raised a rather old post from page...3?))

What do you think about Kenshi lore, basically how should it be revealed? (Should the player have the ability to stay ignorant of the Kenshi world?)

Pick One,(Either answer 1 or 2)read it then read the bottom sentence in bold.
(Answer 1: Long answer)
** I know what you mean, its just I thought it would be interesting if the player had to buy the on-screen map and (if implemented) the compass. If you ever played the Gothic series or Risen the main person had to purchase a map. (And other maps like treasure maps). In my opinion this made the game feel more in-depth because the player had to actually do something in order to gain knowledge of an area. I never really liked the idea of the player beginning the game knowing exactly every detail of the land (I liked exploring). To be honest it really should be the player's choice as to how they navigate throughout the land.I am not saying that the player should start bare, what I mean is that the player should start with a crude map (and what ever instruments) then be able to upgrade the equipment. Basically, the player pays some gold and then the upgraded map or tool just appears on the screen.
If you chose answer 1 you either explored territory on the Kenshi map or bought a good map and now can see more details (like towns or forts)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
(Anwser 2: Short answer)
** I am just saying wouldn't it be interesting to have the ability to buy/upgrade the tools available and control what data you see.
If you chose answer 2 you never left Brink or you still have your crude map, you see only the basic details.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In my opinion having a choice on how you obtain data (buying or doing) is far more interesting than knowing everything that exists at start. (Plus I even give you a choice on skipping my unnecessarily long rant)
** However, I agree that a compass, map or other screen tools should just be on the screen rather than a "physical" inventory item. The main character topic was to justify the buying of a compass once, rather than per every unit.

Absolutely no whole map at start. Reasons are somewhat same with my earlier comment about reducing the map size here http://www.lofigames.com/phpBB3/viewtop ... f=5&t=2402
Game stays interesting as long as there is something to explore. Even if you have done everything else in the game, there might still be empty areas on your map that you want to check out.
I think starting with no map at all fits to the game. You start with a single guy who has never left his home town. He decides to start walking through the dessert and has no idea what it's like or what's out there. He's in the middle of a dessert and is running out of water but just in time he sees some walls in the horizon and starts to walk towards the city. There's no way he could have knew (sry my English
) there was a city before he saw it.
Later in game you have reached the powers of a whole faction and you have one of the biggest armies at your disposal and surely you have gained information about the area around.
Maybe a map you have to explore? That way you knew very little early in the game and a lot later in the game. But it is in so many games that it would be nice to have something else in Kenshi... But it's hard to think any new ways...
This would require yet another new skill... Maybe cartographing skill? I want the map to be completely empty at start and when you walk around you draw the map more and more, but at start the map that comes visible is just rough drawing, almost like drawing by child. When the skill increases, the map won't just jump into more detailed one, it remains the same, but the new areas your character moves he draws little more detailed map than earlier and overwrites the old map with newer where ever he walks. Get it? Better the skill then more accurately the cities and other marks are on their right places and with more details. Like on level one you draw huge X approximately on a place where city should be but on level 10 (maybe this skill shouldn't have very high max) You draw outer lines of a city and mark the places of every shop inside the city etc.
Other possibility might be researching better map since we have the research skill. But starting without any map and maybe possibility to buy a map if you don't want to start researching.
Rumors? You can hear about a city by talking to wandering trader passing by and he kindly draws a circle on your (almost) empty map about where the city should be. But watch out if he's doing it because dust bandit group paid him to lure you into their trap

I don't really like the idea of magically appearing in a world and knowing nothing about it. Major towns, at the very least, should be on a map. The map is for the convenience of the player after-all.
If there is some form of fast travel and you want to prevent that until after you have walked to a town...fine. If you want to have special locations that are not discovered on the main map until you find them....fine. But stick major things on the map. it is NOT difficult in real life to go and ask someone to mark all the major towns on your map even if you did find yourself magically teleported into the area.

Hello,
Just presenting a few issues and ideas to resolve them in Kenshi.
In most games I am very good at getting my way around a map, but in Kenshi, I find it hell.
First of all, your character on the map is marked as an X on the map, so you must fast forward and walk in different directions to find your North-South-East-West. Which is utterly painful, so I suggest.
A COMPASS!
Compasses are not crazy technology, and I would say they probably would have been available in Kenshi's "timezone". Perhaps they could be buyable and it shows your Compass marking when you hold down a button or something, this would be so helpful for navigation, and more expensive compasses could reveal more accurate markings.
Moving on
The game is in development, and Chris probably has alot planned for the map, but atm its pretty average. I suggested along time ago for the map to show faction locations and more information about each town, but he wanted the plyer to venture out and discover it yourself, which I definately agree with! but once you get out there, all you see is the towns and you dont really learn anything. So for my second idea, I would like to place my own markers on the map and label them. For 0.4 this will also be very helpful as you can mark your factories, houses, mining spots you find and wheat fields or such. I have also noticed some towns are missing certain shops such as a weapon shop or armour shop etc... Once you visit a town, you could put a marker around or close to it on your map to say it does not have certain shops and such. Which aids even more to discovery and learning of the map
Oviously, you can tweak these ideas to how you like, perhaps you must research compasses as Chris I know you would like almost everything to be researched
What are your thoughts guys? Who wants more development on the mapping?

This was already asked a lot of times. Use the search function to avoid clutter. Use the search function and you'll find all the info you want.
The X on the map shows your CAMERA location, not your chara location. So moving the camera around will tell you where north, south, ... is without having to painstakingly move your chara around

Yah, already noticed. So since the compass functionality is in the game as an awkward workaround, there is no reason not to do it properly. =)1337 wrote:The X on the map shows your CAMERA location, not your chara location. Displaying it only when the map is open would be more stylish than a permanent HUD display.

I agree. When the moors (and jewish inventors) made the compasses, it was like in early medieval ages! I mean seriously, it's easy just put a magnet, put a magnet that doesn't get atracted to the other magnet, make sure the 2 magnets can go towards the Poles and there ya go! Also timezone WOLD make things more realistic, and I wold like a more "spherical" view of the world. Also, I wold like to see people discussing if Earth was round or plane, stuff like that, not just stuff focused around production, millitary and etc. (for a long time, people though that I was reffering to more tech about that, which made me facepalm so many times)Rainy wrote:Hello,

That marking thing seems like a GREAT idea too, I wold not like to suddently have all my safehouses around the world be lost!
That makes me ahve another idea: CAPTURING MAPS! If you capture them, they may give an idea of what may happen or what is in there: ambushes, treasures, locations of mines and towns, etc. Also you can make fake maps to lure your enemies!
