:( People don't seem to get how ESRB ratings work. About the only thing that's a guaranteed M rating is exposed female nipples or overt sexual content of some sort. Killing children, it's kind of a toss up depending on who they get to watch the video. By the way, the ESRB rates games by having people sit down and watch a video of clips from the game with the most "extreme" content then make their ratings based on that. It's got little to do with context, and it's hardly consistent. Generally it's considered worse to leave controversial content inaccessible in the game files than it is to have it openly accessible. Take for example the sex minigames in God of War and GTA San Andreas. The Sex minigame in God of War was openly accessible and the game was given an M rating, the sex minigame in GTA SA was only accessible through outside modification of the game, and when this was uncovered it resulted in the rating being shifted to AO. Also, sexual content is generally much more controversial than violence thanks to the US's bass ackwards puritanical legacy. Oblivion had regular displays of nude mangled corpses but because the corpses were male, and had their genitalia gruesomely removed from their bodies leaving a gaping gore filled hole the game was given only a Teen rating, until it was discovered that modding the game to remove the female characters' bras revealed badly deformed nipples underneath (due to the fact that they used the same skin texture for males and females). Suddenly the game's rating was bumped up to an M.

Basically what I'm saying is the ESRB is full of shit, much like my country's moral compass.

Also, I don't think killable children will be that big of a deal. At least in the US It's a small indie game so it's not really worth the sensationalist media's time. But with how screwed up the ESRB there's no way to be certain.

I would like kids being implemented. It would add some realism to city life and all. But if they are in the game, it has to be possible to kill them too and interact with them just like any other NPC.

The problem with it is that in many countries, there are strict laws about games and movies that contain violence on children. For example, in Australia the game will be completely banned (I mean not just by ratings but the selling of the game fill be prevented) for even slightest amount of violence towards under aged.

Yeah, it's true. But then that's Australia. The country that's government enforced ratings system refuses to acknowledge video games as being anything beyond a children's toy.

I find myself curious about how so many people are so knowledgeable about Australia?

Not really any more knowledgeable about Australia than anything else. It is just known to have many mothers of little children telling us which kind of movies and games make their children into rapists and killers if people over 18 watch them or play them.

But what do you mean? Who knows so much? Do they know something they shouldn't? I don't understand...

Well I live in Australia (despite not having updated my location status since I moved back).
To my knowledge we are far less sensitive than the americans in regards to movie and game ratings and as for whoever said that our government's "enforced ratings system refuses to acknowledge video games as anything beyond a childrens toy", just confuses me.

Where all the specialist knowledge guys? Because I can tell you from the inside it doesn't seem that way to me. About the only thing our ratings board doesn't like is graphical sex and things involving dead babies... hopefully those 2 are not combined either. Other than that it is possible to get ratings from "Everyone" up to "18+" which is an adults only rating very rarely given out. The standard for almost every single game I have ever seen is 15+ age rating at the highest.

Didn't they have to take out some of the gore from Left4Dead, in the AU release...?

US media usually likes to spin things and stating that games corrupt kids is one of em. Also doesn't Germany have a strict policy on gore?

There are other examples in Europe as well but thought that the Australia was the best known. At least it's the one I've heard the most.

I can't say for every example. But germany has stricter controls on many things like toast said. On the whole, I think Australia is a mid-ground. Most violence gets through with no/minor changes and the only no-go zone we have is, as I mentioned, child violence/sex. We like our children here.

NO NO NO NO!

Do not make it so we have hundreds of mindless brutes to command!
This is a squad-based RPG, and not a commander with huge army game. We recruit one soldier at a time, providing them with equipment ourselves and training them, like we did when we made our first character.

Each one of my soldiers are special, they have different roles, names and I have seen them all do amazing things. I must admit though I have really connected with one of them, its my big brute guy "Tank".
In a fight with some sand ninjas, one of my weaker men, an engineer went down. I couldn't leave him there, so i went and picked him up with Tank, because he got the highest strength. Then one of the ninjas approached from behind. It was really epic and cool, to see Tank pick up his wounded friend and with one hand swing his sabre trying to defend him. I was also quite scarred because I would not want to lose my engineer as I was building a house.
But after seeing Tank do this, I really had a different vision on him. He is not just a mindless brute, a rank and file trooper. He is a character I myself developed and trained, a character I have seen grow, become a better fighter and get better items.

I love Mount and Blade, have played the campaign a lot and loved it. But this is a different kind of game. I did not have any trouble sacrificing my men in that game because it was all rank and file troops. In Kenshi It's a disaster if I'm close to losing one of the characters I worked so hard on creating.

So do not make this a big army game, keep it a small squad based game where you actually care about your soldiers. :D

I will agree that if they can't do an army side of the game well, then it should be avoided, at least for now. Should the stars align, and the possibility for large-group mechanics be favourable, then I would love to see the ability to command a large force.

For that, you'd need ways to categorize your men. Not just into units, but also by their job (so, you can select, "Medic" and see all the medics across your various squads).

from what I understand it will always be a squad based game, but you will eventually have the option to have several customizable squads. it all comes down to choice of play-style. if you want to only have a single squad you can. but if you want to build up to an empire with several cities, and all of the things that come with that, you can do that too.

If I remember right Chris has said that he plans to add customizable classes you can assign your guys. so when you hire a new guy you could make him a medic or something and they will equip themselves with the appropriate gear somehow, whether from a store room or buying it from a shop I don't know.

From the thread "Myltithreading"
http://www.lofigames.com/phpBB3/viewtop ... 796&p=5081
Chris_The_Great wrote:There will be classes that you design yourself. Basically pre-defined equipment setups. So you can tell these 5 guys they are "scout" class and they will go to your stores and gear up with light armour and a small blade, all by themselves. If its not in the stores they will place an order with your resident blacksmith.
They will also be grouped into semi-permanent squads.

Its basically going to be like in a 4X strategy game, where you design a type of spaceship then build loads of them.
