I think it would be a great idea to implement a few Kendo schools in various towns that you can:
- Pay to train in, leveling up sword and combat skills.
- Actually enroll in and become a part of that school, faction.
- As you increase in skill you can challenge people to duels to gain rank within the dojo.
- Eventually become the master/start your own school and have squad members/AI join ( and pay)
- Possibly even have rival schools/ high level ronin challenge you for supremacy.
(Ideas by Nuclear)
- Dojo/Faction emblem and/or custom armor.
- Dojos can be contracted for jobs that can be honorable (or not so).
- Each dojo has the ability to craft a specialty item/weapon and sell.
I think it would be a great way to start learning the basics of combat as well as level up a little, without having to try to kite bandits to city gates. As well as add an alternative to acquiring money and be a samurai rather than trader.
Dojos (source of currency, training, recruits, etc
I like this idea. I would see dojos being very isolated and exclusive places, though, unwilling to engage in the outside world unless forced to do so, likely requiring supplies and nourishment from a nearby settlement out of mutual understanding. So if you do good work helping that settlement by, say, fending off a bandit attack while they were making their way down to the town, a dojo might look favourably upon you and ask if you wish to join their inner ranks.
I think some factions might be willing to ask that you pay to train, while others will outright refuse unless you're seen as trustworthy to them. Sparring would definitely be common-place in dojos, though, so I would almost expect there to be no real "competition" (that could change between each dojo, though). Obviously, the master should be the one with the most experience, so if s/he is surpassed in skill by another or dies in combat, then that person should be the new master.
Otherwise, I generally like the idea of dojos. They'd work really well for this setting, especially now that we know warrior monks are a thing.

Oh gawd yes, that is a great idea c: expanding on it:
If your character is trained enough to be able to start his own dojo without having to climb the ranks? maybe a uniform for Dojo members? (I know someone had suggested that faction armors for player, including emblem, I don't remember their name however :c), once leader being able to contract out your dojo members for jobs? Protecting someone, collecting debts? (can be an honorable dojo or a 'criminal' dojo?), having dojos specialize in certain weapons such as unarmed, spears, katanas, bows? & there should be other unconventional "businesses" you could start.
Maybe a weapon/armor manufacturing company? (Not sure if this had already been suggested ignore if it has >.< , but you can choose what weapons to make, what materials would be used in it, skill would determine how much it is worth and damage caused, choosing your own company name so it appears under Manufacturer: , if you are good enough factions/nations/whatevers offer you contracts to make weapons for them?)
((I have also seen that there are possibly going to be cybernetic arms? Perhaps starting your own cybernetic limb manufacturer? For personal use or profit or both?))

Yes.
I think that a kendo school would be such a fun way to both train your squad members, make a living, and just participate in the world. As I said instead of just going from town to town buying and selling merchandise you could potentially develop the dojo into as you said, a faction of justice or a den of evil. Making their own weapons, or at least having some sort of trade skill to support themselves makes a lot of sense, along with each school having a "specialized weapon/fighting style".
And of course, what fan of sand-box wouldn't want to spend time creating their very own crest and see the people of Kenshi roaming the deserts on their backs.
i'll update original post.
