Well I certainly hope you'd be able to wield a weapon during a duel. But I'm not sure being able to weld stuff during a duel is a necessary feature of the game. We don't really even have the ability to set up proper duels. At most you can knock out all but one enemy, then order all but one of your squad to use block mode.

But speaking of duels, how awesome would it be if you could use your second weapon slot weapon and the primary slot weapon at the same time. Dual Wielding could be really cool, maybe I shout make a feature request for that.

Edit: OH! you meant a welding duel. Yeah I think it'd be kinda cool to have competitions to see who can weld better scrap artwork, or who can weld up a building up faster.

Dual Wielding is a possible future feature, although it really doesn't have much going for it in a realistic game. While a sword and dirk wasn't entirely unheard of, currently there are no models for daggers, but mainly there just aren't any animations available to support the feature.

Our chances are fairly good then as far as weapons go. Have you seen the sabres?

I see you renamed the thread to fix some of the confusion. As I said earlier, I certainly hope we'd be able to wield weapons during a duel, but we don't have duels yet. At least you cleared up the confusion of this being about welding though.

I will take this idea and use it today.

How would it not be realistic to dual wield weapons? Imho it is the ultimate badassery to use two weapons, just it being restricted to smaller weapons. Definetly would want dual wielding in Kenshi.

As for the damage of the weapons when you dual wield it could still have the same attack speed as when using one weapon but the chance to hit would be lower or the dmg could be tinkered some, not to make it too op.

It's not realistic since wielding two swords at the same time is too tiring for real combat.

Even companion weapons were never used in combat but (as the thread name suggests) in duels.

Not even Samurai who carried around up to three swords ever used two at the same time. I think it's common sense that they didn't use all three either....

Miyamoto Musashi liked dual wielding with his Ni-Ten Ichi Ryu style described in the Book of Five Rings. I would hope if Chris does put in dual wielding that there be a high Dex requirement and only usable with Katanas (non-extended), I think that would keep it somewhat feasible.

The big disconnect between realism and duAl wielding is that, save Musketeers and fringe Oriental fighting cultures, dual wielding wasn't something that one could simply pick up and do well with.
It simply wasn't practical outside Musketeer style duels, and the amount for training required was far greater than what one would achieve with a single weapon. Not only that, but you should pick up two of the same weapon, and try to use them both effectively. It's much more difficult than any anime makes it look.

Musketeers themselves used the main gauche a a ~parrying~ dagger, as extending the arm to strike with it would be in open invitation to get your arm hacked off, and closing the distance to make up for it would be just as much of a risk for you as your opponent.

I mean, suspension of disbelief is my favorite thing in fantasy settings. I would love to have my 40 dex-25 str katana user with two weapons.

Arguments about katana being a two handed style and offhand weapon use training aside. I'm thinking of course small weapons only, weapons that are one handed by default, weight being the primary barrier to overcome mechanics wise may be good. Make the system show the weaknesses of such a style well. Offhand weapon strokes will rarely if ever reach the opponent, if they do, he can choose to parry as parry speed allows. The idea being to overwhelm the opponent's parry speed ultimately and get in a 'free hit', a trivial hit, but a freebie. On defense this style could enjoy the advantages of twice the parries, but I'm curious how performance vs a fragment axe should play out. Dodge only?

I'm not sure an accuracy debuff should be modeled beyond the complete fail of offhand weapon reach, BUT a damage debuff should. As well as requiring an enormous stamina attribute to be effective, the bigger the weapon the bigger the drain (as well as the obligatory DEX). Ultimately it should be fun to play with but impractical for similar reasons as in reality.

At the high end, after MUCH practice, it should be a viable style, much like the "penis extenders" in already. I don't see how this can't fit in the game world. What I take exception to is the appearance that it is a superior (or even equal) style. It shouldn't ever be objectively better than an equally well trained single weapon style. In fact I lean towards the opposite, which I believe is true of heavy weapons already.
Fun for bandit mowing, but against an equally trained opponent you'd better quit trying to impress the amateurs and get out your real weapon.

In any event I have little doubt that the developer has already invested significant thought into this, and frankly I trust his game theory instinct implicitly. So, we'll see.

As I mentioned before, the animations for duel wielding may not be attainable. At least, when it comes down to value of added gameplay, I can think of quite a few other things that would be more likely to be incorporated. It is insanely difficult to wield two similar length blades, they will get tangled up in one another and leave huge openings in your defense. A sword and dirk isn't an impossible style, a dagger primarily used for blocking is a style that people have successfully utilized. As far as I know, it was never practiced with a Katana and a Tanto. Of course, some people just won't be happy unless they can recreate Drizzt in every game they play and wield two identical blades.

Although I guess it isn't just swords people want to dual wield, a lot of people like the idea of an arms akimbo duel pistol wielding madman hitting people with perfect precision with pistols pointed in opposite directions. That sort of thing really only works in action movies, trained police officers miss a large percentage of fairly short range shots, and these are people who often have worked for a long time to develop their skill with firearms.

If you were gonna try and dual wield a katana and a tanto against a guy with a fragment axe, you would either have to be either really elusive or you would get crushed. Theres no way you would be able to block a massive 20kg weapon with a 1kg weapon. MAYBE if someone was VERY VERY skilled, they could parry the axe. Hopefully the combat in the game will take this path. I love the idea of a paper-rock-scissors type combat.
