Freelance Working for NPCs

So I saw a post earlier about how there are no NPC farms in the game.

How does working for NPCs as a freelance farmer/miner/worker sound? For each product created, you would receive a small pittance in payment, thus increasing city building skills as well as earning pocket change without having to solo bandit bosses for their bounties.
