I know that the map is already very large, and that you intend to keep it a similar size or even downsized it but i beg you to have a larger map. My reasons for this are if the map is small and condensed where is the fun. If you want to trade from town to town and the journey is very short how are you going to have those moments where you set up a camp and it is raided? And if an army is sent against a village, i want to be able to think "hmm maybe i can ambush them before they reach the village" but if the journey is short how would awesome stuff like this happen. And in you said that you want allies to be able to come to the rescue, but having to decide "if i send my men there i may not be able to reach them in time if they are attacked" would be amazing, because you would have to make decisions like that. "if i go on this trading expedition to this far away place and my town is attacked i wont be able to help it" these are the decisions that would make this game one of the best.
I may not have said this quite the way i had planned its hard to get down the awesome things i hope to be able to do but in my opinion having a large map would be better than a small condensed one.

Bigger Map
Well.. actually if you go read the roadmap it says:
http://www.lofigames.com/index.php?opti ... &Itemid=71
http://www.lofigames.com/index.php?opti ... &Itemid=71
So it is a planned feature..THEN AT SOME MAJOR POINT:
The big bad new world map. 4x larger than the current map, and containing 6-12 different biomes to explore. Full of stuff to do and with more factions and gameplay that takes you further than the current bland level of killing bandits.

Originally I was going to expand the world map to be 4x bigger, but I might reduce that now. As the game has a focus on building static structures that's going to take away the practicality of long-range exploration, you aren't going to want to travel vast distances away from your home base. A smaller, denser map will also mean if your characters are split up across the map they can run to each-others aid a bit easier, so you can send out rescue parties, reinforce your HQ during attacks etc. It will still be a bit bigger than the current map however.
I see then, in that case I agree with you.. 4 times bigger would be better, though I am fine with the current size if it lets core content stuff be added quicker.. before expanding to new areas... And that the road-map page should be updated to reflect current goals..
The issue I have is more, if he tries to diversify the current map with more biomes then.. They will probably feel "small".. and be less interesting because of it..
I am not sure 100% what he envisions as "end game content goals" though.. If all game-play paths are to lead us to building outposts, and then the game be centered around it.. Maybe its less important for the map to be bigger.. but if he will maintain the "be what you want" idea from start of the game to finish... where you stay a traveling merchant or whatever longer term.. and don't necessarily set up a single base that you stay around.. and instead continue traveling, Then that bigger diverse world map is far more important to maintain interest in those paths..
Also as you say, it can add to outpost side of the game to.. since it makes some choices more difficult..

The statement OP quoted is almost a year and a half old now, and I would disregard it since the Roadmap is a more recently updated document.CyberFerret wrote:*snip*
Also, Chris mentions the new, bigger world map in recent interviews with JPS and Rezzed.
