Samurai Top Knots
Kinda funny you mention this. I think even the Japanese realize how silly topknots were, because if you watch any samurai movie (Ran, Yojimbo, etc) the main character will specifically not have a topknot. Hell I'm not sure if it was even fashionable in that age, I think it might've been just a way to make helmets fit better. I can see chopping down a bunch of rank and file people with a topknot though.
From what I remember from my previous studies, the length of a samurai's hair was a symbol of their personal honor (i.e. the longer your hair is, the longer you've survived in this war torn landscape).
The topknot hairstyle was created to allow samurai to keep their longer hairstyles at social gatherings while preventing them from interfering with combat.
Don't believe it had anything to do with fashion, since you were more likely to commit seppuku because your sister ran away with (or kidnapped by) some farmer's son than anything involving fashion.
