So, for starters..
  • I'm new here.
  • I don't own Kenshi (yet ;-;)
  • And I have no idea if this has been requested yet (EDIT: Just checked, it hasn't) or is on the "To-Do List".
But I figured it'd be a good idea to pitch everybody's way since it could add some random dynamics to base assaults, both by NPCs and PCs.

The premise behind the idea is this;

Say there's a large horde of Cannibals about to attack a lightly defended town.

This lightly defended town is on the plateau of a mountain however (I.E. Mountain near Black Scratch), with only one way up.

An NPC stationed inside a belltower built next to the gate of the town would see this oncoming horde of Cannibals (being on top of a giant-ass tower overlooking the nearby dunes and all), and begin smashing that bell as hard as he/she could, alerting everyone to "hide 'yo kids, hide 'yo wife", etc.

Armed (and assumedly armored) defenders would rush out of the buildings and group up near the gate to prepare to defend the town, for obvious reasons.

But - and here's where it gets interesting - say the town has a positive reputation with, oh.. the Trader's Guild as an example, and there just so happens to be a group of Trader's Guild Slavers traveling close to the town.

..Close enough in fact, to hear the bell ringing.

Meanwhile the defenders are doing their best to hold off the Cannibals, but aren't quite numerous enough to do the job.

Suddenly, TG Slavers swoop in and help with the fight, catching the Cannibals in a pincer attack and allowing the town to successfully defend itself due to the boost in numbers and inability for the Cannibals to escape.

Slavers get their slaves, and the town lives another day.

TL;DR - Add in Belltowers that cause civilians to shut and lock their doors while guards, mercenaries, and (if it can be implemented) nearby allies rush to the town gate to hold off the attackers.

I went with the concept of Belltowers because, y'know. Clockwork stuff in a junk-punk (not-quite-steampunk-not-quite-cyberpunk) post-apocalyptic (?) world with bony humanoids, bug people and junk-bots seemed to be more viable (and interesting) than just basic watchtowers. (Which are obviously going to be in the game at some point as basic early-warning buildings.. right?)

Interesting idea, no?

Links are allowed to a point, but we are currently having issues with a flood of spam bots.

for now i would rather they not be included for the time being specially with new people to the forum.

and thank you for understanding.

Ah, okay. No problem.

It's sad that spam bots have to even be a thing on sites like this..

I love the idea! I think it could add interesting dynamics to the mix, as well.

This being said I also think the current alert system could do well to go a similar route. Bored bandits sitting at a camp wouldn't all realistically bounce up and be running to the target. But if an "alert" goal is added that causes the NPC to look around the general area is implemented, If the current alert system included something like this, then maybe a guard that spots an intruder might shout that out and only the NPC's who hear the call respond, while maybe some others beyond hear a commotion and look outside to investigate or aid.

I had an idea for food automation that added a menu tab for settlements where you could set rations, set the % for selling goods etc... This would be a perfect addition to that system. You could add a setting for jobs when the "alarm" goes off, like Settlers 1, 6 and 5 go to the main gate while the others man turrets near the enemy first and if attackers can path to them if passive go to another building and man a turret there or stand and fight.
