Sometimes when you are looking around it becomes very difficult to see enemies/loot-able corpses, etc (because they mostly fell through the geometry, or are UNDER WATER, or are really small to start with, look like the machinery around them, or are otherwise completely invisible except to "pixel scanning" with the cursor - which is tedious) and other times it's just tedious to go through every container again to make sure you didn't miss one, find the container in the ruins you stuffed everything in to because you got attacked on your way back and have now forgotten and have to look through all of them again, etc...

So what I'd like to request is that when you hold the "alt" key (to display objects on the ground) I'd really appreciate if it would highlight loot-able containers as well (including bodies).

A simple "aura" outline would be fine.

In fact, highlighting enemies (red) allies (green) (and possibly neutrals in yellow or something) would be nice too!

Options to turn on/off each kind of highlighting would also be nice.

highlighting enemies would defeat the stealth feature or the surprise factor that the game has when enemies/NPC's sneak up on you.
Do you believe the sexes should be equal?
Oh heavens no.
Then Men would become unmanageable

Since it would only highlight visible enemies (ie, non-stealthed enemies, or those discovered by perceptive party members), this would not be the case. Stealthing enemies that you haven't spotted don't show on screen at all (and seem to just "pop" into existence right on top of you) therefore highlighting wouldn't show on them.

What WOULD be highlighted are enemies that are "visible" to your squad members, but that you're just having a really hard time finding because of UI/terrain/mesh clipping/non-transparent water/shrubbery/buildings too close to each other/stairways/pile of large corpses/strange camera elevation issues/middle of a canyon/any other issue where your squadies can see them just fine, but, because of interface issues, you cannot...

BTW: This is the same functionality alt currently has. If your team doesn't have line of sight to an object, it doesn't show up when you hold alt... I'd assume highlighting containers/etc. would work the same way.

How would you know what is in a container you haven't actually looked through? I suppose with fallen enemies you see things like fallen weapons and all that.

I think they should keep meta-info to a minimum.

The idea is that if you CAN loot it, then it should highlight - it's just saving the PLAYER time/effort - we can assume the squad members took a quick look and made note of which ones had stuff in them...

The highlight option could work only when there aren't enemies around/squad members in combat if you're worried it could be exploited. (ie, it highlights EITHER enemies, or if no hostiles, then containers.) That'd be quite fine with me. The idea is that if I CAN search every box by hand, all this is doing is making that chore a little less tedious...

Because tedium is not fun, and having to look through every box/container when half of them are empty is tedious, not fun. And not finding an important item because you decided to give up the tedious search is even less fun...

Alternately, a button that told the squad to loot everything in the area and put it all in a pile (like a camp container item that just told the AI to gather everything in a certain range) would also work for me... In fact, that would be better, and I might be able to make a mod for that....

That can turn out to be a bad idea. Items you drop on the map are not permanent, they will eventually despawn although this is not time related I think. They will despawn if you load the game or if you move away to far. This happens to all items you interact with, even if you fail to pick them up. Only items in storage are safe, unless you import your game.

So you could end up losing your whole loot pile simply because you loaded your game, or because you moved your screen a little to far away from it, maybe you switched your screen to a far away character or somebody back home for a bit and oops goodbye loot pile.
