Basically i find the task of trial and error discovery for if you are or are not inside a faction "tax zone" to be a tedious unfun process.
As best as i can tell the only option a player has is to build a gate and just wait around long enough, defending a gate from rando attacks and thugs, to find out f anyone is going to tax event this "base."
If they do, tear it down, move to new, basically random guess location, and try again.
I can understand a certain in lore POV leaving this info out. But I find for players, this is probably info that works out for better play experiences to not have to be ignorant of until a tax event hits.
Not concerned about the randos and thug factions in any given area, really just the major "nation" tax zones. If someone big enough claims land and plans to tax. i find this info to be a significant enough influence on player decisions. It is probably more often appreciated to get to make an informed decision in relation to this one, rather than what feels like RNG trial and error guessing.
This is particularly a deal for situations where it is possible to wind up inside the taxed zone, but far enough out on the edge of it that you really are paying for nothing. The only influence a tax zone may have is to have a cost, but see no patrols and receive no aid of any kind from that faction around your base.
Even if it is a map it as you go process that does not add political boarders to a map until you've had some process of discovery.
but a process that can involve exportation / in town talkies /map info purchases in some way. Just not that a player can basically only find out if they are or are not inside a tax zone, after they choose to start building. But have that be information available to inform our location choice.
FYI: This was the thing that had me go checking out a possible mod. I tend to get in for the designer's vanilla first to see what it really is before home brewing my own game of whatever off that. But nothing was to be had, the mods for maps I could find were mostly just about placing the "zone names" and lined boarders between them onto the map. But nothing that made it clear if a taxing group laid claim to the land you were standing on or not. Leaving us to trial and error of finding that out, which is more of a tedious task than interesting challenge to face basically. So a way to inform the player of this directly instead of the,
can you tax me now?
trail and error version of grindy boring.
