A much needed feature that needs to be added is plant life that is of use to the player both as a boon and a hindrance to survival and exploration. This will hopefully make the world as a whole feel a bit fuller and more interactive rather than the mostly stale world we have now.

Brambles or other spiked vegetation could function as a barrier that you could force your way though if you wanted to but you would incur damage from it unless your armor is sufficient, or you can hack your way through it but that takes time. Perhaps you could even grow these kinds of plants as a defensive measure for your home base.

If would be nice if we could find plants in the wild that were food producing, they could come in a two different forms, readily eatable fruits/berries/nuts and things that need to be processed before they could be eaten, such as needing to be cooked to get rid of toxins or to convent parts of it into edible sugars.

Some parts of the map might be so overgrown that you literally cannot traverse it without tools such as a machete. Or maybe if you have a hatchet and some nearby trees you can throw a log over a ravine. Maybe make a makeshift rope-bridge/ladder/rope from vines to reach places? These could be a special category of building, needing only materials you find in the wild. Some long forgotten installations could be overgrown with all sorts of vegetation that would need to be cleared out before you can enter.

Perhaps you could collect green vegetation to throw on your camp fire to produce a lot of smoke which will act as a signal so that close-by NPC's on the map come and check you out? Could be a good way to make contact and get some help.

Different kinds of terrain with different effects for combat/stealth. Right now we really only have ground and water, ground is good and water is death, it should be easy to increase the kinds of terrain with effects both for combat and stealth. Different kinds of terrain could aid or hinder your stealth, some could increase the noise you make thus lowering your stealth, others could dampen the noise you make thus increasing your stealth, perhaps bushes could be used to hide in when you move into them. Water should increase or decrease your stealth depending on how you use it, if you can swim deep then you likely won't be seen at all, some water could be very dirty and offer zero visibility, whereas water that's only knee deep is only a hindrance because its likely to make noise. Maybe some ground types are dangerous to walk on without caution like volcanic rock which can be very sharp, another ground type might have dangerous shallow holes into which you can step/fall and break your leg, these places would be very dangerous to fight on. Maybe ground near a cliff could give way during combat, maybe some ground is slippery and causes you to fall prone. Maybe some ground is difficult or hazardous to run through making it a perfect place to bait enemies into with ranged fire.

Maybe we should be able to set traps, either for food or to damage enemies. Historically there is lots of precedence for trapped ground in warfare, we should be able to do the same to defend our bases.
