Scotterius! I offer you reffuge! Come, join the Cult of the Emperor, where it's patriarchial, where men dominate, where we seek to uncover the secrets of the human mind, where we train with a secret program that is possible the best one ever, where we are guarded by the greatest, biggest and strongest walls ever made! Come, my child, join the Cult of the Emperor, and become... an acolyte.

I like the idea but also think that perhaps this could lead to unsavory press for the game. Some are not as open-minded as we are ont his sort of topic. Again like with most feature requests this could potentially become a mod for the game. I would assume it would be a monolithic thing to tackle however.

It would need a lot of resources (like buildings, banners, flightless birds and the like), but the scripting could be easy. Build a simple shrine that spawns a cleric, and you tell the cleric what you want combined from a set of options. Things like: theme-type of sacrifice-festival types- holidays ... and hey, cult assembled.ownpk611 wrote:I like the idea but also think that perhaps this could lead to unsavory press for the game. Well the way to prevent people from becoming enraged and wanting to kill all the people who are supposedly "insulting" their religion is to not have copies of modern day religions in the game. As a result a dynamic new variable is added to the game and nobody gets hurt... EXCEPT... for the NONBELIEVERS of THE COALITION OF ORDERED CABBAGES. ALL HAIL THE GREAT AND ALMIGHTY STEM. But in all seriousness, an excellent idea indeed.ownpk611 wrote:I like the idea but also think that perhaps this could lead to unsavory press for the game. My issue is that people will be out there and create something like (example only here) Christianity, Islam, etc. and videos containing these will draw in comments that would allocate "bad press" for the game itself. Although I suppose people are bright enough to understand the difference between the purpose of a game feature like this and those ignorant or immature people out there who would abuse it. My concern however still stands. Then again, I suppose I have brought up arguments against my own case. *sorry for the ramble

Given that I just got the game today, I noticed there was really only one religious faction in the game, but it was treated the same as the other factions (akin to the Holy Roman Empire, in my opinion). I think Kenshi could try something cool, and have faction relations divided by settlements, political factions and religious factions, akin to feudal Europe and how many people had multiple levels of allegiance that started from their community and extended to religious beliefs across vast parts of Europe.
To apply this to Kenshi, let's say that you have a political-military faction based primarily in one city and a few surrounding areas, but within your city, there are at least two, if not more, competing religious factions. Imagine if, one day, two religious factions suddenly declare war on each other, and they're prominently represented in your city. Now you have to try and keep the peace within your city, or else you could see a full blown civil war within your walls and even between your guards, if their loyalty isn't strong enough towards your people. Or if you feel particularly evil, you could simply "alter" your faction so it is heavily dominated by one religious faction...
Also, the great thing about Kenshi is that these religions don't have to have specific ties to any one real-life religion; they could simply be divided into animalism (worship animals), shamanism (leaders have connections to spirit world), polytheism (2+ gods), monotheism (1 god), transtheism (religion beyond concept of gods; think Buddhism) or atheism (no religion). You could design a bio for each, but I think it would be better just to leave it at that and let imagination run its course.
Having a faction specifically for a settlement would be harder to program, I think, but I would define a settlement as having at least one food-providing structure, more than two houses and maybe one trading outpost for travelers and caravans within a confined space; a random trading post in the middle of nowhere probably wouldn't count as a settlement unless there were civilians making a living nearby.
The reason why I would suggest this is because it makes everything just complex enough that it would crush anyone who attempted to get too much power too fast in Kenshi - including other enemy factions who might want to come after you - yet still entirely possible to win nonetheless if you could carefully build your faction in a certain manner.

I'd like the idea of this, although I have views against religion as a whole I still think in a game like this cults should form in cities to give the people something to hope for considering the world of Kenshi is very much a post apocalyptic hell hole to live in and cults generally would form in that sort of situation.
The gameplay aspect fits perfect although I think it would be great to have in-direct population control, the aim of the cult could simply influence people who you do not have direct control over to do different things. Maybe a balanced option which has people do things that aren't being done (mining, manufacturing, trading, etc) till they are all balanced out appropriately.
Alternatively a war like cult would work toward manufacturing weapons and armour whilst training up soldiers. I was thinking it would get ridiculous when your one squad of people turns into a massive sprawling city filled with people, having direct control over everyone and them not simply 'sandbox-ing' if you leave them alone for a while would get too complex at that stage.
Although if you want to take direct control over an extra person then people in your cult could be hired for free since they already technically follow you. I'm just throwing my own opinion into the pot so feel free to ignore me if I've said anything already said, some of the posts in this thread were a bit long and I didn't want to read a solid paragraph of text.

In terms of size, it would make sense for most religions to start out as cults; in fact, I could see the early days of one's campaign being full of small skirmish battles between competing cults for power. As the situation stabilizes and some cults develop into more full-fledged religious institutions, then you could have more stability but the potential for massive wars between surviving religious factions.neronix17 wrote:snip
And cults could just as easily be divided into the different forms of worship I mentioned earlier: some being animalists, some led by a powerful shaman, some believing in one or more deities, some believing in a concept more than a being and atheists or agnostics could be a sort of neutral party of their own, seeking to survive and hope no religious institutions despise their presence. Cults could also have unique personalities of what they want to achieve as a whole, like you said. Some may seek to conquer the lands, some may seek peace, some may want to isolate themselves from the rest of the world, building their own closed-off fortresses, and some might simply want to build big profits.
Being able to start your own religious faction would also be quite interesting, whether you do so in the early days of small but numerous cult clashes or in the face of massive religious institutions.
The harsher the existence and poverty in a country, the more its people will turn to religion for comfort and solace.
The world of Kenshi is such a harsh world and I think this religion idea is the best idea I've seen so far for Kenshi. I mentioned some things in a thread i started about politics and diplomacy but I'll just repeat them here.
1.Theocracy govt type for factions should allow the faction to build shrines and eventually temples. This is where the practitioners of the religion will come to perform rituals, meet, and perhaps pray. Cult members will make pilgrimages to the great temples from all over the land.
2. Religions can be spread like recruiting but perhaps there could be a possibility to convert anyone instead of just the unemployed males that hang out in bars. Once converted they do not join your party to go adventuring with you, they continue their normal lives but are considered a member of the religion. Perhaps they will make a pilgrimage to the holy temple or shrine later.
3. Religious wars can and do happen. Religion can spread randomly like culture in a region where it is prevalent.
Also that pic Scotterius posted of James Earl Jones as Thulsa Doom... Yes, my thoughts exactly..
Please make it happen Chris

what would the player gain? Well, dding various religions to the game would most likely increase the various faction wars.
more faction wars!
Other than massive amounts of mindless followers who will do anything in the name of the cult? The piles of 'donations' you could receive from those followers, the soldiers you could recruit possibly for free? The fear your enemies would have from those epic amounts of followers? Not much.BooterTheLooter wrote:toaster Assassin a wrote:Well, dding various religions to the game would most likely increase the various faction wars.
