Hunger has an indication number/meter, body pieces have health meters, experience has meters.
Sleep should have a meter too:
- I can go from -144 to 24. (168 hours total = 1 week)
- At -144 you die (1 week without sleep)
- After 6-10 hours of sleep you can stay up 24 hours without problems. After -24 (so up for 28 hours so far) hours you start to suffer sleep depression. After -48 you suffer some deep sleep depression (so far 3 days your character just tanks). at -144 hours death.
- If you go under -24 hours you have to sleep at least 16 hours to fully recharge, above -24 hours you still only need 6-10.
--- Go below -48 and you need 1-2 day of rest.
- People auto go to bed once they hit 0 if there is a free valid bed around. Otherwise it's the players decision to go to bed in a town at an inn or so. Explore all you want, better carry a sleeping bag though. Everyone needs a sleep bag now instead of just one communal sleeping bag because otherwise your people will need to sleep in shifts instead of all at once. Would slow traveling down. Would prevent a person from amassing a horde of people if they can't afford to keep them healthy in food/sleep.
- It would add another way to kill your people in game besides the already so many ways to do it.
- People that didn't want to deal with it, just like they never wanted to deal with hunger, would probably just make a mod.

This would help give a sense of life to a game where otherwise people can work non-stop. This was thought of in conjunction to reading that other guy's aimless sitting/food table thing request. (which i replied my other extra ideas to also).
This brings purpose to beds which can otherwise be ignored if you never fight. Just like the hunger indicator gave purpose to food (i believe you originally did not have a hunger indicator for a while (I bought the game early 2016)).

16 hours to recharge? what? humans can barely survive 24 hours awake. at 48 you've already set into a series of problems . at 72 hours which the majority of people would never be able to reach because your body will force you to shut down before then. would be the currently believed maximum point you could remain awake.

while i don't inherently mind stamina. noone wants to sit waiting 24-48 minutes for their character to become ready to go into action again. waiting 8 minutes is fair enough but! thats 16 minutes you get to play with one character and 8 minutes you're waiting doing nothing.

when you have more than one character this wouldn't b so bad. but you're still spending about 1/3rd of every hour just watching your character sleep.

now work exhaustion requiring taking a break getting some rest instead of working endlessly day and night is fine. and sleeping when injuries need healing are fine. but sleeping , with no real benefit in a game tends to cross the to realistic factor. which usually ends up with complaints of boring.

its just adding a detrimental effect to the player that has no real reason to exist with in the game.

there is always a fine line between "Oh this is fun" and "Oh man this just drags on..." even the Sims game series doesn't make you watch your sim sleep for 8 minutes. it speeds up as soon as all sims on the lot are 'out' an barely lasts 30 seconds. because idly watching a character literally do 'nothing' isn't 'fun' .

and i'm all for 'realism' so sure have sleeping. but the fast forward button would have to speed up to about 10x its current speed, which means you would die without much defense as soon as something popped up because it would move at a rate most people couldn't react to.

sleeping when characters are 'wounded' is generally enough for most people an even that has people complain that it takes to long doing nothing.

honestly the more i re-read your suggestion. i really thing you might prefer the Sims over Kenshi. i don't think many people want to baby sit their adult warriors.

I heard the fact long ago that a human could stay awake a week before dying (ends up the world record is 264 hours (11 days) and several others have held out 8 to 10 days in carefully monitored studies). So reading articles too shines a light that people do start suffering after 24, shutting down at 48, and hallucinating at 72, among other things, and obviously it is not linear for everyone. Maybe someone can only make it 47 hours before they start hallucinating compared to another. etc.

Now I've never counted how long 24 ingame hours goes by in this game on speeds normal, x2, or x4. When I have 8 - 12 people at an outpost I may or may not micromanage them. But when I have two outposts going, more than 30 people I don't pay attention to one. I will check if people are injured or any major stuff is happening, but I let them go about their jobs otherwise. The auto-sleep when injured seemed to finally work out for me, auto eat when hungry. They all are doing something, or just about. So I don't pay much attention there.

We can be control freaks with our characters, but jobs and mechanics were put in to help us micromanage. We don't tell them to get food manually every time their are hungry, they do that automatically, and you could stop them from doing that if you wanted (to a point... you'd have to hide the food instead of leaving it in a bin they can auto-pull it out of). You can prevent them from going to sleep when injured, or manually put them in bed when you want to. You can tell them to work the farm/forge/mine/bench manually, and they will go until the whatever is full and stop, but you likely will put them on a job instead because you don't want to assign them to one field, wait for them to finish it, and assign them to a new field and wait for them to finish it before you assign them to another etc.

Giving them a sleep indicator they have to follow would help bring continuity to a game that could/can turn into a boring grind (all games can feel like that eventually). A mechanic to work around, work with, make things a bit more fair to the npcs*.
About having to wait for your character recharging (refreshing) their body; it's just as annoying waiting for my person to heal injured limbs. Maybe toughness can affect sleep indicator too, making you rest faster and drain slower like it does with limb healing (with a cap).
It's not an obstacle you have to really suffer around. People could be given a box that you do/don't check-mark to auto-sleep or not. You can't auto-sleep if there is no bed around. You can keep moving after 24 waking hours has passed, you just will suffer a bit more as time goes on until you sleep. Sleeping is only natural, that is why you suffer a penalty at night unless you put light up. You shouldn't be able to run cross country and back again without needing a nap.
If you play the game likely like everyone else you have more than 1 character. If one needs to sleep, the others can still act. If you are in a traveling band it still adds flavor to a continuum of adventuring across the land. And again, just because they are recharging doesn't mean they cant get up if attacked or if they want to attack something. They can get right back in bed after that is over. Your limbs don't reset to where they last were just because you got out of bed before they reached 90, no reason your sleep would have to either.
And I think your biggest beef with this is time it takes to rest. Cut it down then, the devs can make it only need 2 hours of sleep to be fully rested (if you only been awake 24~ hours). Someone will make a mod to cut down the time to recharge, to get rid of it altogether. Just like they did food. We're playing a awesome video game, we have nothing but free time. Look at the map, think about what you're going to do once they wake up, look at your inventory and stats, etc. Read a article on your second monitor while they nap. Respond to a text message. Don't pause the game anymore to respond to that message or article, let it pass with your characters sleeping.
I like sleeping after a long day, and I don't create swords or armor or mine ore or farm all day. I sit on my butt for part of it. My characters should get the benefit of sleep too. To do nothing for a while. It's just detrimental with no benefit - then give them slightly boosted stats for the first 5 hours after they awake fully recharged.
* npcs technically don't need sleep, but they do follow routines where they sleep, even when not injured. And they get up if attacked, or if their city is under attack. My injured characters get up from sleeping when fogmen are attacking others in the base, cause mechanics (and i can shut those mechanics down by turning them on passive while sleeping).

I knew a guy who did all his sleeping in 1 day. 16 hours of sleep a week... I don't know if he is still alive now.

OP would be a good line to follow. Only 6-10 (just make it 8 to be simple) hours for an entire day seems legit, and after that the penalty becomes worse.
