Please rethink the material cost of walls.

Currently walls and the items used to build them don't make much sense.
The first tier of walls look like simple scrap metal. I think it would make more sense if this kind of wall had no material cost to build them, since they look like strapped together scrap metal scavenged on the spot instead of anything made from processed stone or metal.
All the other tiers of walls should have a cost in both Building Materials and Iron Plates as they are clearly made of both in their appearance.
If jumping immediately to Iron Plates instead of just Building Materials is a problem, you could consider adding in a new tier of wall after the first, you could perhaps re-use textures from the already existing walls of buildings for its appearance as those already look stone-like and wall-like enough to function as simple early city walls.

You are talking about what "makes sense" and you propose... being able to make something from nothing? That to you is realistic? Whatever the walls are made of, they aren't made of air. Thus material costs make FAR more sense than not.
Also free walls do not sound terribly good for gameplay. I could walk around covering the world in walls in very short order (no cost = no build time) for free. I could see a threat nearby, pause, and wall them in so they can't get to me.

yep, walls out of nothing is a really bad plan..
IMO gameplay-balance is more important than the idea of realism.
Ideally you'd have both but first the balance, then tweaking in realism..

The idea behind a no cost wall is due to the already mentioned description.
Tier 1 walls look like they are made out of a random assortment of junk. It would make sense for them not to have a material cost (no Building Materials or Iron Plate cost) because the idea is that their parts are scavenged from the wasteland, which is why they look terrible. Which I doubt is all that unrealistic given the vast amounts of junk littered in the game world.
As for the game-breaking aspect, I don't see the problem. It's not like we couldn't already build the entire world full of walls anyway, it only takes time since resources are seemingly infinite, all it takes is time.

I always insist on larger scaled games, like Kenshi, keeping to the certain level of abstraction. "Building materials" are exactly this, the abstract building resource. Adding anything else would essentially bring the exact same thing in the end, but at cost of more time and effort. Time is precious.
Besides, i've not seen that much scrap everywhere. Okran's Pride, Cannibal Plains, and many other zones doesn't have all that much. Scrap is definitely there, but not everywhere.

those walls only cost 1 building material.
there is no need to reduce it to zero as mentioned above by a couple people.
if you wish to have zero cost you can either mod your game to where they require nothing to build. or use the ingame editor and place the walls.
for the base game there will always be a cost to build anything.
