When a city is created in a desert it is created around an oasis as without this oasis chances are the inhabitants would have no water. Which is why for the desert I would propose adding an oasis around or near every city as well as several throughout the desert including one for each bandit or enemy faction as they would also need water, even though it may not come into gameplay these would add a nice sense of reality which would fit with the scenario and also help to break up the bleak landscape.

Landscape details and more biomes are going to be added in the future.

I like the oases in the desert. Would definitely add realism and depth to graphics and stuff. Also oases on desert could be used as water filling places. If your squads water is about to run out, you might want to refill.
But as said, there will be other biomes than desert. Landscape looks so empty now because it's still very early development. There will be water and forest and other...

A suggestion would be the 'heat' line effect @ peak times (12:30 to 4:00 o'clock)
This would add amazing effect to the desert scenery

I am not entirely sure what percentage of the final map will be desert, but a heat effect could be interesting, I'm not sure how difficult that would be to implement.
