Formations, Tactics, and Drillmasters/Strategists

As ranged weapons become available, I think this will become more important. I'd like to see the ability to form up your squad into some formation that maybe gives everyone a defense bonus, like a shield wall type thing (yes, even though there are no shields. call it something else lol).
Or a formation that lets you assign a group of units to form a wall in front of your ranged units while letting you split off a group of fast moving soldiers to go after your enemys' ranged units.
Basically (and I hope I'm not alone here), I'd like the effectiveness of your commands in battle to be as important to winning a battle as the sheer number/power of your fighters. Things like flanking bonuses (or the ability to hide certain units in the sand to set an ambush) and formations.
I can win most encounters that I run into now because I have 5 good, well equipped fighters and 5 ok fighters, but mostly I'm just watching the distribution of my men and switching some on/off of defensive mode or over to medic mode depending on how the fight is going. I'd like more tactical engagement in the game.
+++++EDIT+++++
Maybe the best idea in this post: You could, perhaps, hire/train a strategist who could enable more complicated formations and tactics for a squad. That could help distinguish between bandits (who have no strategy) and the big factions, who, like the Roman empire, can win fights where they are outnumbered simply because they have better discipline and better strategy. You could even require your men to spend time in a drill yard with the strategist in order to up their discipline in combat.
