Hi, first time making a topic, sorry if I did not do it correctly. I have seen many topics about new clothing items, armors, and other defensive and protection ideas, I myself have two ideas that have either been mentioned lightly or what seems like not at all. But before you start reading remember this is an open blog I want to also hear your ideas on armor features that should be included.

First idea, armor stat changes. Kenshi has already implemented armor changing speed, attack, and defense stats; but I want to see more. I want to see clothing and armor that helps the user with other stats like science, thievery, or stealth. Now granted it looks like plans for "sneaky" clothing have already been put into planning (Just read the summary describing the turtleneck). But I want more than that. What if there were glasses that could give you a free point in science, or make earning experience for that category easier. Or maybe a hat or mask that increases the ease of which combat skills are obtained, again just an idea.

Second idea, shields. I have seen quite a few comments about shields and even found a long dead topic about them. However I would like to refresh the idea. The inclusion of shields will almost be a must, especially when the ranged weapon update is complete. Now I have a little experience with game design and know that programming in a new device like this would be time consuming, mind numbing, and well in general a pain in the you know what. So I have thought of two ideas that might be simpler ways to add shields in. Way one, make shields a weapon that can be attached to the main slot, but instead of attacking damage a huge defensive bonus is given. Unfortunately this would also mean the inclusion of dual-wield, otherwise your player would just be running around without a weapon. Way two include armor variants that include shields in the skins, these specific variants would just have much higher costs and defensive bonuses. The only problem with this one is that new attacking animations would be needed.

Again I hope you like my ideas and I would like to hear yours maybe together we can come up with some ideas that would be good enough for Chris to include.

Well that's it I guess keep playing, support the cause, and game makers keep up the hard work

I guess you could have included the shield part at it anyway (not sure because is old one i guess).

I do agree about the stat bonus as long as they rather credible, might be just an example, but i don´t think a piece of cloth or glasses would magically give you more brain power, it´s easy to work with defense offense, but i guess with other will be harder to do, a cloth to improve thievery?

How does it work to do that? a magic ninja rag? Or it simply makes you think so and more confidence make you work better? For now i cannot think of much beyond that

With the turtleneck i see, so like others, hides your identitity, but that would not be a direct stat change, but rather a side thing, a supporter, it helps it, but dos not change it.

Thievery and stealth are easier to explain, some cloth that make no to little sound when being used, would make it easier to sneak about. As far as science goes I was more thinking of really wacky steampunk glasses that would maybe have a built in microscope or something with a similar likeness, to help with research. Maybe even an outfit that includes a tool belt that gives an advantage to the wearer in construction or research due to ease of access. Again this is all just ideas, I enjoy the criticism, it helps fill gaps and further explain how ideas could or could not work.

Now that seems good, at least explained, (sorry i am half brained at the moment), but like i said i do agree with stat bonus, some are in, i just would rather see them "with sense" xD.

Greetings,

On shields. It seems, to me anyway, that shields do not necessarily fit the scope of the current and future design concepts of Kenshi. Walking around the Kensni biomes with a shield wall seems to break away from the swordplay pseudo-steam-punk-apocalyptic setting, or SPSPAS, (haha sorry had to make a bad joke) that has been given to us by our bearded developer.

That being said I think that there should be 'something' like a shield in place particularly to balance out the eventual threat of ranged weapons. The closest thing I can think of that will parallel the game concept, or SPSPAS, is a shield type bracer. Slightly larger then the forearm, big enough where you could raise it to your vitals to fend off incoming projectiles, but not so large that it would render ranged weapons somewhat useless vs. heavily armored troops.

To add further balance perhaps the shield bracer would indeed add defensive bonus' vs ranged, and maybe even greatly increase the clickable 'block' defensive bonus for melee, but wearing a shield bracer would garnish attack damage totals or even limit the type of weapons you could use.

I could be wrong though. 'MAYBE' different biomes, ie. the ones that have yet to be implemented, could be more medieval-ish as opposed to SPSPAS-ish allowing more traditional forms of armor/weapons/combat to be used. But personally I like the idea of sticking with the SPSPAS Chris has already laid out for us...

OOOkay now I just trying to see how many times I can type SPSPAS. :D

Oh attached is a concept piece for the shield bracers, just for the visuals...not my work, but found upon the great interwebs.

I see as one of the reasons for shields the intrudoction of ranged weaponry, i ask me then if you noticed the arrow defense skill, means that this part Chris has figured out.

Nothing against shields, i just don´t picture them really in the current environment of the game, and i guess more than biome you should think the faction, it will depend more on their style than where they in, tho their place (resources) for sure would affect their buildings and weaponry and more.

Those tiny shields i actually thin could be nice on ninjas, other than that i can only get in mind together with fire weapons for some reason  But i guess as well after seeing some arts concept, especially the crossborw, the art team would be able to get a shield design to fit well with Kenshi.

i dont agree on clothing that gives bonuses to skills. i could wear a tool belt and put on some whacky glasses, but that doesnt mean im going to build an eiffel tower better, or do brain surgery flawlessly. as for shields, perhaps not giant roman shield walls and walking shield-tanks, but rather bucklers and the aforementioned shield-braces. and, perhaps a different biome where they DO do shield walls, ect.

While I'm not sure this is the perfect topic for this idea, I'll fold it in here because of the shields discussion.

Rather than shields as an "armor" or a stand alone weapon, perhaps shield and sword could be a primary weapon set. Mainly, I'm thinking some sort of Wushu Style using a traditional Chinese Rattan.

http://www.chinese-swords-guide.com/anc ... apons.html

I suggest this, mainly because the weapons already have an eastern flair to them that is not limited solely to Japan. I see a lot of the weapon suggestions focus on Japanese weapons, when only the katana class is strictly Japanese in design. A lot of the other weapons, especially the various horse and ringed sabers, are Chinese or lower Mongolian in design and form.

That way, rather than have the shields be a shield wall type, they could be a parrying type while still fitting the eastern aesthetic. A rattan would make more sense than, say, a standard European buckler, despite similar shape and function. The rattan and sword combo could also easily fit the current "SPSPAS" environment.

In terms of gameplay, I imagine the sword-rattan combo weapons would be slightly less effective in combat than comparable katanas in terms of damage output but better at parrying and blocking enemy strikes.

I didn't read the whole discussion but before it goes any deeper to shields:
http://www.lofigames.com/phpBB3/viewtop ... ields#p219

That's a link to one of the discussions where the developer states that there will be no shields.

hate to necro old topics, but was thinking about this lately and had some thoughts to add. So better to keep them with a previous thread then start a new one.

I was thinking about clothing, that bonuses for things other than combat.
I would thinking that the gi's should give a bonus to athletics and combat without a bonus to armor.
Ninja gi's should also give a bonus to stealth.

Monk clothes should give athletic bonuses.

Anyone who has worn them know that they are more comfortable to move around in the normal clothes, that is why we wear them to train.

But I was also thinking that there should be things like a medic's vest, that would improve medical skills.

A black smiths apron for working at the forge.

There was already a mention of a tools belt for working in construction.

How about a hoe that could be equipped in the weapon slot. Not much damage for fighting but it could give a bonus to farming.

Additional special tools could be made or found for working at other jobs.
Like was mentioned above specialize goggles for science would be cool, possibly a PDA type device that could be equipped in the weapon slot.

If you really want to get into some fun, when the robotic limbs come into effect, having ones that are specifically designed to enhance field medicine, or scientific research would be awesome. maybe some with a hidden compartment to hold poison would enhance your assassination skill.

Maybe a Chief's hat for working at the stove. you know those things must give chiefs a boost in cooking, why else would they wear something so ridiculous if they didn't help them cook better.

It would also be neat to have a few more options for plain clothes that citizens could wear besides just the one t-shirt and pants. (I'm sure this could be handled by some of the more 3d skilled moders.)

My only addition to this is i would like more sections of armour to mix an match

like shoulder guards for left/right
bicep
fore arm
wrist
hand
upper torso
lower torso
waist
thigh
shin
foot
neck
head front/back/top.

so we can kinda mix an match an come up with our own desired appearances. instead of fixed out fits.

Oh god yes. Double bump. I'd like to see the starving bandits with a different assortment of rags in different armor slots. For a horde of shambling beggars, their attire is very standardized.
