Terms I searched: watchtower, lookout, tower
Should approaching faction groups be perceived with someone being on the lookout? How does it make any sense that your outpost is somewhat...alive?
Lookout Tower. As the name implies...it's a tall, observation tower where one looks out the surroundings for any incoming factions. Good if we want an extra member guarding our bases, until the actual "patrol command." The lookout person will enable the alert of any incoming envoys, raiding party, or any incoming travelers. Their squads will be marked with a banner icon for better visual.
I'm pretty sure I previously suggested the banner suggestion...

I posted this in a totally unrelated thread:
What if you could research an early warning system, that will let you build a bell, and you could have a guard, or watchman, "work" at this bell, and whenever he spots some type of danger (we'll give him some random value to be his "spotting distance" that can be affected by skills and/or attributes), then the notification will appear.
All of this will likely not be considered until Perception is implemented.
My 2nd
+1 to Chris sharing his thoughts on how perception is going to function.

I think its been fixed now so that we can't see infinitely anymore; that's part of why the place looks so empty. Perception is going to extend that range, I'd suppose, just naturally going up like Athletics.
So a lookout tower that gives a boost to that would be nice. Also, towers are cool.

There is an option that lets you define the view distance.

did some digging before I posted cause I knew this idea was in here somewhere.
I was thinking that if we get the lookout towers, that they would have to have someone manning them, but when enemies were spotted they would sound an alarm that would carry all over the map. so no matter what you were doing you would hear it and know to check on your outpost.
Also that would allow you to "turn off" the alarm by telling the character manning it to do something else, like attack.
Also it would be cool to have different options for the alarm. I was thinking of at least 4 different ones Air raid siren, Bell, Drums, Gong. The looks and sounds of those would be cool.
But what would be fun is if you made one that as "generic" possibly just loud speakers on the tower. Then allowed modders or even in game the option to select any sound file to play as the alarm. I'm hearing the red alert klaxon and all hands to battle stations from Star trek in my head.
This also means that if you have turrets in the towers you could create different lookout locations with makeshift walls and a tower, manned by a gunner and someone to sound the alarm. They could all have different sounds so that you could know where or which way attacks were coming from. Or even just that someone was coming through a pass.
