While playing the game, I've come across a few situations where an npc would probably have joined my faction. Whether it's a passing holy warrior who's squad was wiped out to a man, or a starving bandit that I dragged to my town and nursed back to health, it would be interesting if new group members could be acquired in different ways. As my town grows more established and better defended, people seeking a fresh start could pour in from the nearby town.
Mechanically, I'd say having personal relationships and feelings stats would be the best method to allow for this sort of dynamic recruitment. If I saved the bandit, and more importantly, fed her. She'd be much better disposed towards us, especially when we offer her a place inside the walls, doing honest work for decent food. The lone warrior would be lonely, perhaps even disgusted at how quickly his men were killed. Seeing this fresh new group, he might take it upon himself to join up, bringing his sword, experience, and faith to this town.
Such a complex web of statistics and scripts would be difficult and time consuming to create, so I'll suggest a stopgap solution that would work fine for a temporary measure. Allow the players to adjust npc faction relationships. Can it be abused? Hell yes it can. Could it take away from the challenge of the game? Damn right it will. Would it be a great roleplaying tool? Absolutely.

New Recruitment Options
I think everything here has been suggested before aside from allowing players to customize faction relations.
Links to relevant threads:
Hiring / City & Outpost Management
Hiring Guards for Outposts
Social Standards
Group Hiring
Individual Relations
Converting Prisoners
Hire an Injured Enemy
Random Encounters
And this would be the main link I want you to look at: Growing Outposts
Something tells me that it would be possible to create a mod that will allow the player to adjust faction relations.
This is a stretch, but it may also be possible to create a modded bed that will convert an NPC from another faction to your faction, representing you rescuing this NPC or some nonsense.

I mostly made the post for the stopgap measure, but I know it can't be permanent so I added the rest to suggest a proper way to do it.
But thanks for the relevant threads, I'll be sure to use the search in future.

Just to be a little more clear, some people on here post links to other threads to say, "why didn't you use search", but I post links on threads simply because its my way of linking similar threads together so that any of those search terms will pull up both the thread itself as well as threads with links to that thread. XD
For this post, I do agree that whenever faction diplomacy and additional options to alter relations are available, there could be a complex web of metadata that will make almost every one of the player's actions produce a long-lasting effect throughout the Kenshi-verse.
For me, that would add an immersion level that could topple any of the The Elder Scrolls titles.
