Hey guys,
First of all, just wanted to say huge fan, been reading all the info and going through the forums just to get more "Kenshi".
I was just wondering about the price difference between this site ($13 USD) and Steam ($15.99 USD).
I'm assuming at this point that this is some sort of service charge?
I'm definitely buying this game when I get paid, so my question is this: is there any difference between the steam copy and the lofi website copy? If not, why would I pay the extra three dollars? If this money will help Chris I'll gladly shell it out, but I wanted to see what your opinions are.
Also, if I bought a copy here would that key be able to be used on Steam?
Thanks!

it is, afaik, a "service fee" that steam gets.

Steam has a service charge, which is why the game is 15 on steam, so Chris can try to get as close to his asking price for the game as possible. If you buy it from the site, it's "cheaper" because Chris only wants 13 for the game and the funds go straight to him instead of a cut percentage going to a third party.
Let's say steam takes 30% or so from each sale. If you buy it on steam, for the $15.99 asking price, they get about $4.80 from the sale; that means the dev gets $11.19. If the price was listed at lofi's price, ($13.00) steam would get about $3.90 and the dev would get $9.10.
Math may be off, since I just woke up, but hopefully you get the point.
If you purchase it through lofi, the $13 goes straight to Chris. Nothing more, nothing less. You save money by purchasing it at $13 through lofi, and it gives the dev more money in the process.
I'm pretty sure all new keys purchased through Lofi activate on steam as well, though you may have to opt-in to steam's beta client update.

I'm sad I bought on steam rather than here, but at least I gave him 75$ in donation!

It does stink that he gets less per sale from steam, but Steam is amazing for promoting your game, I would probably not have heard of it at least for a while if I didn't see it on steam and say "hey this looks amazing."
So he gets less, but he is getting sales he might not otherwise have gotten in the first place.

I died to some bandits a minute into my first game.
I now love this game.

The email you get from lofi includes a steam key; the normal key that comes with it does not work on steam, as of saturday afternoon.

I did steam because the game will always be easily downloaded, and it updates automatically... even when I am not at home.

As for the Steam topic, we've seen a fair amount of additional traffic since the game was greenlit, and a lot more when the game entered the Early Access program. Steam is great for the advertisement, but I'm not entirely certain about percentages or anything like that. The price difference between this site and Desura/Steam has always been to offset their service charges, but as for specific numbers Steam doesn't disclose them with the unwashed masses and thus only Chris knows exact numbers. I see 30% bandied about quite a bit, but as far as I know it's pure conjecture. Still, with 70% of the digital distribution market Steam is a great place to sell indie games, even if they take a 30% cut, if you're selling at a significantly increased volume it's worth the cost of admission.
Well I guess both are good for Chris. From here, he gets more money, from steam, he gets a good add. I personnally got it from steam, and will maybe donate more here if I got the money for ^^
I probably would'nt heard of it if it wasn't on steam tho. So I think their ads work

Over 700 members have joined these forums since Steam opened their Early Access program. Considering that is undoubtedly a small portion of those who have purchased the game, and many of those have likely come to the forums after seeing or purchasing the game on Steam, it's clear that Steam comprising 70% of the digital distribution market has had quite a positive impact on the number of copies of Kenshi sold. Those over 700 members are a bit more than one fifth of the forums total population, and while about 1125 of our 3000 members haven't posted, many of our more active members are new to these forums. Steam is clearly an excellent place for indie games to be discovered.

Yeah, as long as DRM free alternatives are offered, steam is fine. I guess.... well not really "fine" but so many purchasers use it now adays... sigh.Clawdius Talonious wrote:Over 700 members have joined these forums since Steam opened their Early Access program.
