Found it!

I joined a caravan and followed it around until it was attacked. I helped fend off the attackers. Instead of continuing to follow the caravan, I took the spoils of that first battle. I came away with a new sword, some chest armor, a shirt, a pair of boots and a better sword. I limped back to the town I originated from and recruited a grunt. Managed to run into another caravan, followed it. Another attack soon came, we fought bravely once again. I stayed to spoil the corpses of our enemies. My new henchman got himself some new gear. Limped back home, sold our loot. I have a new backpack this time as one of the caravan members died, so I took his stuff too.

Back in town, after a brief respite in the hotel, I recruited another fool. Went back out again following yet another caravan. This time didn't go as well, I had to carry my newest recruit back home, and my main character and my first grunt got a lot of medical field training after the last battle.

All in all I'd say I've gotten a fairly good start. Found a way to slowly increase my skills with minimal risk to myself and my men. I've gotten a fair amount of cats in my purse. I am enjoying it thus far. I am looking forward to the updates in the near future, and seeing what the developer is able to do with this game. The controls need some tweaking, and some of the "features" currently disabled right now seem interesting to me.

I love how I can pretty much write my own story, and I am not herded along like cattle on a pre-planned route. It's refreshing. No quests, just make up your own. Love it. Knowing death awaits you around every corner, and having no illusions about being super powerful and being able to wipe out hordes of enemies like in other games. That doesn't happen here.

Really looking forward to seeing how this game shakes out in the future.

In the future there will be "quests" you can accept if you desire, but nothing that you have to do to progress or anything along those lines, randomly generated missions will have you breaking slaves out of imprisonment, hunting down vicious criminals and that sort of thing. Currently some bandit leaders will have a bounty on their head and you can carry them back to a town with a police station and collect the reward. When they're added, quests will be dynamic and optional, and should help Kenshi feel like a game where you can go anywhere and do anything you want, while offering some ideas for new players as to what options they have.

Glad you like the game, welcome to the Kenshi community.
