I definitely think he got really lucky. Was playing for a few hours earlier, gates wide open(yay dog attacks...) only to have 4 trader groups just walk right by. Had about 4 shops doors open, unlocked and set to public(gates as well) but nada..
I have a base at around (50000, 39500) with an open layout (no walls).
The saloon is quite in the center of the base which has a sort of street made of buildings left & right.
I did not notice the guy entering, because i have been busy around 1 tile away, but when i checked the saloon he was standing at the shopcounter (large). I put some bread & rum in the counter and they were immediately bought. Then the trader guy departed and walked away.
The base is set to "public", same for the saloon building + its doors are open all the time.
I suspect that pathfinding has some impact on it, i think i used ctrl+shift+f11 at least once prior.
