Can't figure out how to feed dogs?

So as you can't drag and drop any kind of meat that i can tell into your dogs inventory, it was assumed i needed a backpack for my dogs, which was kinda silly in itself. But upon obtaining an animal pack, i found that you can't put them on dogs. So.. how do i feed them? is there a way that i'm not knowing about? or is there some kind of bug? My poor dogs are just going to starve, because nothing i try seems to be working.

From what I've seen of the system so far. Characters automatically eat food from their inventory. So somehow you have to get food to them. I myself haven't even gotten that far yet, still at the hub with a large population scaling. So I have to toughen up quite a bit before I go running around.
