Registration Key Not Working

Alright, so here's the scenario i'm in right now. I have played Kenshi on steam for a solid 87 hours and recently have decided I want to be able to put it on a flashdrive and take it to a friends place and such. Issue is, when I try to use the CD key I got on steam to activate the non-steam full version of the game, it says it failed to activate. Anyone know how to fix this?

I just got the game and started it up, it launched but then closed before any menus showed up.
