Here are some videos of the terrain's scale along with both male and female editors.

The first video I'll show is Kenshi's massive terrain - estimated at 400KM big. Oblivion is 25KM, and fallout3 is approximately 16KM (however, a good portion of that is not enter able)
The video does a poor job at showing the terrain out though. But I tried to show the scale of it - you guys didn't even see all of the terrain ;-)
Things to keep in mind:
-This terrain is not final. There is some refinement expected
-This terrain is unpleasantly bland. It is lacking props and other doodads.

The second and third videos are the male and female editors. While offering a limited selection of hairs and faces (you choose from a list of premade ones) Kenshi offers strong customizations for the body, as you'll see in the video.
Things to keep in mind:
-This version of the editor is obsolete. Chris has a much better one, and was disappointed by me showing off this one.
-There are a few bugs/unpolished features - these will be cleaned up.
-Much refinement is needed ; right now both male and female have the same effects applied to them - Chris has not had time to "customize" each genders sliders

Is the terrain intentionally very deserty, or is that simply because it's unfinished? I like the desert thing, mainly because that means more terrain with less computer resources needed for foliage and such, but either way works.

Both, its unfinished desert. There will be more content and stuff in there one day.

Sexy. The desert theme is entirely too underdone in rpg's. It offers a really nice shift from the obsession most rpg's have with forests. (not that I don't think various environments shouldn't be in an rpg, but seriously, forests are way overdone)

I love the idea of a desert landscape, though. Not just for the escape from the norm, but also because it offers a lot of interesting gameplay aspects. Lots of survival difficulty and it forces people to stay near water. That means an invading force needs a great deal better preparation than they would in other locales. An ai may take the necessary time or they may blindly charge forward to assault an enemy, leaving their troops dehydrated and demoralized before the battle even begins. I just love the natural limitations of the desert as they can be easily (and ironically) used to push the game forward and overcome the limitations present in so many other games.

Things are coming along nicely, but expect some bad (and possibly) good news by the end of the month. Here are some pictures of my buildings currently in the game - 2 aren't in them (market and building #3). Keep in mind they are likely to be updated sooner or later.

http://img210.imageshack.us/img210/2489 ... 045444.jpg - This one is showing off a weird shadow glitch. Notice the face's normal is turned away from the camera, yet shadow is still rendered on it.

Next up is for large and small details, inside objects, and than walls.
After that I will start on buildings again.
As for my old stuff (http://www.lofigames.com/phpBB2/viewtop ... 46&start=0) LOL I SUCKED. Still do though, improving tons.

As Zephyr said, deserts are way to underused, and it is a real relief from all those sparkly eye candy confusing full of detail forests and tropical jungles.

I guess this is one of the strong points that i like about Kenshi.

It's something I loved about stronghold crusader and desert rats vs africa corps. Desert setting just has sooo much untapped potential, especially in rpg's.

i mentioned it elsewhere, but since its relevent to the topic, on world generation at the beginning of the game, would it be too complicated ot set up so you could specify a size? that way of your on a lower end, or a higher end machine, you could spec it to be equivelent. and you could also specify how much you wanted to be desert, e.t.c. (i also pointed out elsewhere you could create tundra and plains with reletively little change to the desert graphical work)

Also the world size has no effect on performance, only the active view distance and amount of stuff within it.

Hey, will there ever be a map editor in the released game? Like, not the editor you use to build the world, but an editor for players to make custom worlds?

i actually meant more to do with ai calculations. if the world is populated by ever reacting npc's and we assume an average population density, then logically the larger the world, the more people, and the more settlements, and therefore, the more interactions needed to be calculated.

as it sounds, i get the impression the ai have a LOT of freedom, and that, i believe makes it more complicated, and all the more processor intensive, right?

Yes but after a certain distance things are unloaded and AI updates etc revert into a minimised, efficient mode, with fewer updates per second. So only things within the active range affect performance, and you can reduce that range.

And yes, the level editor is available. Press F4 in the current demo.

ah, ok.

on the flipside, can you extend the range as much as you like, or is there going to be a capped maximum?

ugh, adding this in while i wait

is the post limiter supposed to be like this? im seriously having to wait like ten five minutes between each post or it comes up with 'you cannot make another post so soon after your last.' in red. im just wondering if its a glitch, or if its actually set to this?
