Confused

I've just purchased the game today and I am not having very much luck figuring out what I'm supposed to be doing. I figured out how to "hire" an additional character in my party but it seems I only have enough money to hire a single character and perhaps a piece or two of starting gear. Now that I am out of money, I then go out exploring and seem to run into roving bands of no less than 6 enemies who easily wipe me out. I've tried this a couple of times now with the same results and finally got frustrated and decided to play something else. A tutorial would be nice. How does one get started?!

It also helps to understand the philosophy behind the game. This isn't meant to be a world of warcraft thing with a nice safe little newbie area where you can safely level and collect sasquatch noses (or whatever). It is supposed to be a little more real. If you and a buddy grabbed a sword and ran out and tried to attack 6 other dudes armed with swords you'd be squished.
So try and survive. Some tips are to get bandits to chase you and then hide like a little girl while the guards kill them. You can sneak in some attacks from the back to help build skill.
other idea's are to send a single character into battle and have him get squished (as usual) and then when the bandits have moved away you can send in your second guy as a medic. Hopefully your first guy survives the blood loss though.
Also, try using the 'block' mode in battle. This will give you a bonus of 20 to defense but you won't attack at all. This allows you to build your defence up quickly so that later you can more safely switch to regular attacking stance.
Eventually you will become very powerful. I am running a single character save now and he is unbeatable provided he doesn't attack a town. Building houses single handedly and chopping up any aggressors. Perhaps the game could still be made MORE difficult since this doesn't feel very realistic.
EDIT: Also, maybe it goes without saying but the game is in alpha right now. Currently the only way to build skill and get real money is by killing and looting. this can get repetitive. Chris is working on implementing farming, mining, crafting and at a slightly later stage some jobs. This might eventually let you take a job as a bodyguard for a merchant or in the army, etc. Allows you to acquire some money and experience in a (slightly) safer environment with some guys at your back.

Next to the stats and map buttons there is another button which explains the game's concept.
Like Blxz stated above you need to get your defence skill up using the block button. Once your character(s) block skill is upgraded to a decent level, you put them back to aggressive mode and they will start to block on their own. (The block ability is automatic, but if the skill is low then they block like crap. The block button makes them focus solely on blocking).
Ways to make money.
-Trading
-Stealing
-Scavenging
-Killing
The game is not plot orientated, YOU are the PLOT. Also know that most of the features are not implemented yet.

Yes, what those guys said. There is a HELP button near the bottom right of the screen which has basic tutorials. And if you start off making money by trading and running from fights you can get a larger group together, and probably stumble on some loot along the way.

Is it just me or the Aggresive, Defensive and Evade, buttons are turned off? :O

Yeah, non-functional as far as I am aware. There might be subtle effects but I think those are going to come into play later in the games development cycle.
