No, not necessarily. In the main menu, there's "Import" option that allows you to transfer your characters, and optionally, research and buildings into a fresh game world. Some other things like relationship will also be transfered, i believe.

The feature that lets you keep your squad between updates. Other wise you would have to start over after almost every update.

Nope.
I have had tons of games where I spent hundreds of hours developing characters that were not just avatars but characters in my mental stories. then the games would update or end or do one of a hundred other things and I would loose the ability to play those characters ever again. I hate games like that. Kenshi's commitment to let us keep our characters and form bonds with them is one of the key features that make it a special game.
Some may use it as an exploit, but I prefer to import as little as possible. But if I couldn't import at all, I would likely have given up on the Beta process a long time ago.

Sometimes it's the opposite :) I've got one save that has a very specific spot for "resetting squad position" and it's set so that some characters will most certainly get stuck.

I wonder if it will ever be removed after release though. I also wonder if there will ever be the point when import won't be needed anymore, because i'll go nuts if i'll have to import even once after 1.0, since it's killing the whole map progress, and taking away the immersion.

It's a great feature for a beta phase, but it sucks for post-release, period.

Import is a feature which certainly has its good points, but I would certainly like to see an 'iron man' mode which has it disabled - that would be much better for immersivity IMO.

True. I just want to remove the temptation because I'm weak :-D

The good old import feature has been saving our squads for years. I remember long ago (very early version) when the change logs mentioned that there won't be any more squad wipes, and some where skeptical that a game in such an early state could keep that promise. Here we are and promise has been upheld through so much change.
