Is there and easy way to improve relationships with factions? Because I killed a merchant (just to see if I could get the faction angry at me, but now I can't get building materials because the store owners attack me. I've tried the easiest way I know of by healing the dead merchants, but to do this I must hurt them. (It won't let me heal them if they're conscious) Is there any other way to improve the relationship?

Currently, healing up their members is the only way to make factions like you more, as far as I know. Missions and such for the various factions are planned, but not implemented quite yet.

If you look under the factions tab, you'll see your reputation with each displayed by a wide green bar, which is your long-term standing. Sometimes, you see a narrower red bar, which seems to indicate short-term relationship status, which reflects whether you've attacked or healed some of their members lately. The red bars shift rapidly, while the green bars tick up or down slowly, depending on your recent actions.

You can end up with a net gain in reputation by fighting a faction, and then healing them. When you first attack them, the red bar will go in the negative, and the green bar will start to slowly tick down in that direction, but once you start healing them, the red bar shoots back on the positive side of the line, and the green bar will slowly tick up while the red bar heads back towards zero.

This way of improving faction rep is pretty slow, but you can make it go a bit faster if you have good enough fighting skills and weapons to quickly down the target faction members, so that you don't lose much long-term reputation before you start healing.

Thanks, The best thing I've found so far, though it's hard to do is attack a merchant, have him chase me to some bandits and hope they attack him. Then escape the bandits (or kill them if they're weak enough) then heal the merchant.

Thank you for explaining the short term relationship bars, I was confused at how quickly my relations were changed.

Hurt the merchant till he is unconsious, bandage him, pick him up and put him on a bed which doesnt belong to him. It will give you rep but he will drop from the bed, pick him up again and put him on the bed again for more rep. Repeat until happiness but its probably a bug.
