As the title says beak things seam to no longer fight.

Attacking a squad causes them to run around and eventually scatter.

It seems dogs behave the same.

NONE of the animals fight.
Dogs, Beak Things, Even Leviathans just flee as a humanoid unit does without a weapon. They will not fight. I just took 100 newbie (2 stat) bandits, and beat down 3 leviathans over the course of half an hour. Some of those bandits came out with 40+ in attack when they started with 2's..
OS: Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-3570K CPU @ 3.40GHz (4 CPUs), ~3.4GHz
Memory: 16Gb
AMD Radeon R9 390 Series

Exactly this, right now the leviathan is just a big punching bag, It almost feels like cheating because you level your attack so fast.

If it's within consistent game mechanics.. Is it really cheating though?

It isn't consistent with game mechanics, the established game mechanics are that Leviathans, dogs and beak things are hostile creatures. Until the devs say so otherwise, its an exploitable bug, abusing it is tantamount to cheating.

But its a single player game, do whatever you like :P
